ROCKER SAMMY HAGAR TO TELL ALL AT CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK 2011

He is the multi-platinum Red Rocker – the outgoing, bombastic front man of hard rock champions Van Halen, the man who won’t drive 55, and the man currently fronting his own supergroup, Chickenfoot. Better known as Sammy Hagar to the masses, he is one of rock music’s most successful and notorious singers. On Saturday, March 12, he will be the subject on an exclusive interview at Canadian Music Week – taking place at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto – sharing the stories of his formidable rise through rock music and private enterprise.
For over 30 years, Sammy Hagar, also known as “The Red Rocker”, has been a fixture in heavy metal music. From the Montrose albums that are an essential part of the foundation of what became heavy metal, through a solo career that produced such hits as “I Can’t Drive 55″, to his decade long stint as the front man for Van Halen, Hagar has sold millions of albums all over the world.
Taking over for Van Halen’s original singer David Lee Roth in 1985, Hagar took the band to unprecedented heights, including four consecutive No. 1 albums, before being unceremoniously fired in 1996. Eight years later, he returned triumphant, leading the band on a reunion tour that was a box office smash.
Throughout his career, Hagar, a guitarist himself, has played with a succession of genius guitar players; from Ronnie Montrose and Neal Schon to Eddie Van Halen and Joe Satriani from his current group, Chickenfoot, which also features former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.  Endorsed by Gibson, the guitar company introduced a new signature Les Paul for Hagar earlier this year in celebration of his role in Chickenfoot’s success. The guitar features a look and appointments chosen by Hagar.
As a songwriter, his songs have been covered by other artists, including Bette Midler and Rick Springfield, whose 1981 Top Ten hit, “I’ve Done Everything For You,” was written by Hagar.
In addition to his legendary status among rock stars, he is the masterful entrepreneur behind the Mexican resort Cabo Wabo Cantina he founded in 1990 and home of the handmade premium Cabo Wabo tequila – the most successful new tequila brand in the liquor business in years. Hagar has since expanded his restaurant chain with Cabo Wabo Cantinas in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe and a series of airport restaurants, Sammy’s Beach Bar and Grill that raise money for local charities.
In his autobiography RED: My Uncensored Life In Rock, set for release on Saturday, March 12 through HarperCollins, Hagar tells the outrageous and unbelievable stories of his rise through rock music, detailing how his voice became instantly recognizable all over the world. Lavishing readers with behind the scenes stories from Van Halen, one of the biggest rock groups in history, Hagar tells of the global stadium tours, private jets, parties, and of course the ups and downs that came with fame and success.
For a rare look into the life behind the man, visit the Canadian Music Week website – http://www.cmw.net/conference/online-registration/ – to register for your Canadian Music Week delegate pass.

2011 Inductees to Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame

Rock ‘n roll legends Bachman & Turner, entertainment lawyer and television producer Stephen Stohn and broadcast pioneer Bill Evanov – three of Canada’s prominent entertainment figures – will be celebrated for their achievements and contributions to Canada’s musical heritage with an induction to the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame.  The three will be honoured on Thursday, March 10, 2011 during the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards gala at Canadian Music Week in Toronto.  Evanov, in particular, will be recognized with the Allan Waters Broadcast Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to a broadcaster in acknowledgment of their extraordinary contribution to the broadcast industry.
Randy Bachman, who is often referred to as the “architect of Canadian rock n’ roll”, is well known and respected throughout the world as a guitarist, songwriter, performer and producer.  As evidenced by his 8 acknowledgments in the recently released book, The Top 100 Canadian Singles, his music has provided a veritable soundtrack of the last thirty years of popular music, with over 120 platinum, gold and silver certifications, and number one radio hits in more than 20 countries to his credit.
As a founding member and creative force behind The Guess Who, he was pivotal in the band’s success earning an unprecedented run of 5 million-selling singles alongside songwriting partner and bandmate Burton Cummings. The group scored their first Billboard hit in 1965 with the song “Shakin’ All Over” followed by “These Eyes” in 1969.  By 1970, The Guess Who were outselling The Beatles, churning out hits like “American Woman”, “Laughing”, “Undun”, “No Time”, and “No Sugar Tonight”.
With the formation of Bachman-Turner Overdrive in the 70s, Bachman eclipsed his earlier triumphs with yet another musical phenomenon.  Made up of core members Bachman and Fred Turner – the man with the “refrigerator-sized vocals” – the group sold in excess of 30 million records over the course of a four-year run, driven on the strength of a high-powered stage show and rock-anthems turned hit-singles – “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet”, “Taking Care of Business,” “Hey You,” “Let It Ride” and “Looking Out for #1.”  At the pinnacle of their career, the band’s distinctive brand of stripped-down, blue-collar rock headlined some of the biggest arenas in the world.  After Bachman’s departure in 1977, Turner, whose heavy guitars became a BTO trademark, remained as one of the group’s mainstays, and continued the legacy well into the ‘90s.
Randy Bachman and Fred Turner have reunited after over 20 years apart to record and tour again as a full-throttle rock machine: Bachman & Turner.  The duo has released its first two singles, “Rollin’ Along” and “Slave To The Rhythm”, off of their latest self-titled album released on E1 Music (Canada), RBE Music/Fontana (U.S.) and Cadiz Music (Europe) last month. The album features all original new tracks penned by the pair, including “Rock and Roll Is the Only Way Out” and “Moonlight Rider”, which have a sound that seamlessly fits alongside Bachman-Turner Overdrive classics.  As part of their induction to the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame, Bachman & Turner will be making a rare appearance with a performance of select hits.
A pillar of Canadian show business, Stephen Stohn is recognized not only as a leading entertainment lawyer, but also as an extraordinarily successful producer of music-related television series and specials.
For nearly 20 years until 2009, Stohn was a Director and then Chair of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and Executive Producer of The Juno Awards, Canada’s national music awards show. And for nine years he was a Director and Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee of Ontario Media Development Corporation as it moved from a strictly film-based mandate, to now assisting six different silos of the entertainment industry including music and digital.
As a lawyer, his clients have included numerous recording artists, songwriters and record companies.  But Stohn also helps bring Canadian music to the world in other ways.  As President of Epitome Pictures Inc. and Executive Producer of all its productions, he has for many years overseen the television series Degrassi (in its current incarnation extending over ten seasons and over 200 episodes).  He also executive-produced four seasons of the dramatic music series Instant Star.  Over the years these series have licensed nearly a thousand tracks of independent Canadian music, and in turn showcase that music in over 140 countries worldwide.  And they have also served as a launching pad for the careers of many young actors and musicians (including Drake, who starred in Degrassi for eight seasons.)
Stohn has been instrumental in the creation of a number of institutions – from the launch of Trent University’s radio station (now CFFF-FM) in the late ‘60s to the formation of the Songwriters Association of Canada.  And for decades he has been an unabashed lobbyist for reform of Canada’s copyright laws.  The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television has honoured him with 21 Gemini Awards nominations and nine wins.
Bill Evanov is the Founder and President of Evanov Communications Inc., one of Canada’s fastest growing independent broadcast companies and the first broadcaster in Canadian history to elevate female employees to ownership status through new radio license acquisitions. A true entrepreneur, Evanov went from owning three radio stations in Toronto to 11 across the country in a span of just six years. His foray into radio kicked off with CHIN Radio where Evanov was instrumental in morphing the “Spaghetti Dig in Contest” to what is now the world-renowned CHIN International Picnic – over 30 years running and recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest event of its kind.
As one of the few independent broadcasters left in the country’s largest markets, Evanov has pioneered several distinct formats and become a leader in supporting new Canadian talent.  He defined dance music as a unique radio format when he re-launched CING FM as Energy 108 in 1990 and took it from 90,000 to over 800,000 weekly listeners.  He then recreated the format on CIDC FM and grew it into the #1 CHR station in the country as Z103.5 with 853,000 listeners. In 2007 he launched Proud FM, the world’s first of its kind, programming to Toronto’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) population.
His Summer Rush Concert, now in its 18th year, has developed into the largest annual live concert produced by a radio broadcaster in Canada.
Evanov strongly supports education with over a million dollars in scholarships and endowments offered through universities and colleges throughout Canada. He raises thousands of dollars every year for dozens of charitable initiatives including “Boating for the Cure”, whose proceeds go towards prostate and breast cancer research.
In honour of his induction to the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame, Evanov will receive the prestigious Allan Waters Broadcast Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional contribution to the broadcast industry. The Waters Family, specifically Allan Waters, founded the CHUM broadcasting empire in 1954 and built it into one of Canada’s most respected and successful broadcast companies.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE – TO SPEAK IN RARE ONE-ON-ONE AT CMW 2011

On Saturday, March 12, Canadian Music Week will play host to one of rock’s most distinguished voices and personalities – Melissa Etheridge. In an exclusive in-depth celebrity interview at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Etheridge will share her philosophies on music and discuss her life and times.
Melissa Etheridge exploded onto the rock scene in the 1989 with the release of her critically-acclaimed eponymous debut album which was four times platinum in Canada.  Etheridge’s popularity has been built around such memorable songs as “Bring Me Some Water” (from her debut), “No Souvenirs” (from Brave And Crazy) and “Ain’t It Heavy” (from Never Enough), for which she won her first Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal. She hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, 1993’s Yes I Am, featuring the massive hits “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought her second Best Female Rock Grammy.  The album went six times platinum in the US, double platinum in Canada and spent more than two and a half years on the album chart. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret (#6 on the Billboard Top 200), which included the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.”
Her astounding success has been recognized with a Juno award for International Entertainer of the Year in 1990, the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996, and the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “I Need To Wake Up” in 2007.
Her 10th studio album Fearless Love released in April of this year expands on the multiple strengths that have made Etheridge one of the most beloved figures in rock. The album has struck a momentous chord around the world, including a Top Ten debut on the Billboard Top 200 US album chart. In support of the release, and prior to her interview at Canadian Music Week, she will be performing March 11th at Massey Hall in Toronto.

CMW 2011: PERFORMERS ANNOUNCED FOR THE INDIE AWARDS

PERFORMERS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2011 INDIE AWARDS

PERFORMERS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2011 INDIE AWARDS

Canadian Music Week is proud to present the 11th Annual celebration of The Indies at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel on Saturday, March 12, 2011. Featuring performances by Janelle Monae, Shad, Hollerado, Bombay Bicycle Club, Hannah Georgas, and Desperate Union, the concert will be broadcast live on XM Satellite Radio’s “The Verge”.
One of 2010’s breakthrough artists Janelle Monae will be making her first headline appearance in Canada with a performance at the Indies. Her spectacular debut The ArchAndroid has topped the best of lists from Associated Press, MTV and Spin to iTunes, People and Entertainment Weekly as well as earning the singer two Grammy award nominations.
Praised as “Canada’s Best Rapper”, Shad has quickly become one of Canada’s most respected young artists. His third album TSOL – shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize – is a crafted mix of hard-hitting, clever rhyme schemes and soul searching social commentary. Shad’s skillful wordplay and smooth flow, combined with his engaging live shows, and outstanding music videos have earned him fans right across the globe.
Hollerado have become one of the most lovable groups on the planet thanks to insanely catchy and energetic guitar pop, boundless creativity and a relentless DIY approach. With a $4000 budget and a little help from their friends, they scored a veritable viral sensation with their video “Americanarama” – now nicknamed “The 8-Bit Human Video”.
When Bombay Bicycle Club hit the stage at The Indies, Canadian music fans will have the opportunity to discover for the first time what critics and fans in the UK have been touting as one of the most exciting new bands for the past year. Crowned the “Best New Band” at the 2010 NME Awards on the heels of their critically acclaimed debut I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose, the band is preparing to release some unbelievable new material in North America in 2011.
Even before releasing an album, Hannah Georgas’ songs could be heard prominently through your TV, whether in the Gemini Award-winning “Flashpoint” or a Wal-Mart back-to-school commercial. From her EP The Beat Stuff to her debut album This Is Good, the Vancouver singer-songwriter has been edging her way to indie music stardom, topping the year-end lists of iTunes and more.
Together for just over a year, Toronto band Desperate Union have accomplished more in the past year than many bands do in their whole career. The band have already toured with the likes of CKY and Silverstein and just wrapped up a US tour supporting Soulfly. Also on their credits is airplay on MuchMusic for two of their videos – “Black and White Lies” and “At The Sun”. They’re currently in the studio working on an album with producer David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, AFI).
Tickets for The Indies will be available for purchase through Ticketmaster (http://www.ticketmaster.ca/; 416.870.800), the Canadian Music Fest website (http://www.canadianmusicfest.com/) and the Indies website (http://www.indies.ca/) as of Friday, January 14. SONGSTRESS SARAH MCLACHLAN RECEIVES ALLAN SLAIGHT HUMANITARIAN SPIRIT AWARD FOR COMPASSION AND PHILANTHROPY

SONGSTRESS SARAH MCLACHLAN RECEIVES ALLAN SLAIGHT HUMANITARIAN SPIRIT AWARD FOR COMPASSION AND PHILANTHROPY

Canadian Music Week is pleased to announce that Sarah McLachlan, the Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, will be honoured with the Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award in recognition of her longstanding commitment to charitable initiatives.  The award - bestowed to an individual having demonstrated the highest ideals and qualities of humanitarian service and in doing so, has reflected those ideals of courage and compassion - will be presented at the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, during Canadian Music Week in Toronto."As a gifted artist, Sarah McLachlan has inspired fans and her peers worldwide through her music and profound lyrics. As a philanthropist and human being, her spirit, generosity and compassion have encouraged us to look outside our windows and see the world that needs our aid. It is an honour to present Sarah McLachlan with the Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award as she embodies the true form of humanitarianism in all that she does," says Gary Slaight, President & CEO of Slaight Communications.
"I am thrilled to be the recipient of the Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award and honoured to be recognized by a family that has given so much themselves," expresses Sarah.
Since the release of her gold-selling debut album Touch in 1988, Sarah McLachlan has sold over 40 million recordings worldwide. Her celebrated career has been recognized with multi-platinum sales of her albums, numerous nominations and music awards, as well as sold-out tours around the world. Along with her music successes, Sarah McLachlan is renowned as a benevolent supporter of social change, a spokesperson for animal rights, and an advocate of music education, contributing to organizations and charities worldwide. In 1997, Sarah McLachlan founded Lilith Fair, a touring festival organized to showcase and promote women in music.  Over its three-year history, the festival brought together two million people and raised more than $7 million for charities and women's shelters across North America. One of the biggest music festivals of the 1990s, Lilith Fair was the most successful all-female music festival in history, helping launch the careers of several well-known female artists. After an eleven-year hiatus, McLachlan relaunched the festival in June 2010 and in partnership with the i4c Campaign, committed to contributing $1 from each ticket sold to mobilize investments for companies that drive social and environmental change.
On the success of Lilith Fair, Sarah McLachlan was honoured with the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Visionary Award in 1998 for advancing the careers of women in music.  New York Governor George Pataki presented the singer with the award on the 150th anniversary of the first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, NY.  Two years later, McLachlan was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada for her outstanding achievements, dedication to the community and service to the nation. In addition to the Lilith Fair concert tours, Sarah McLachlan has also been involved in several other philanthropic causes. In early 2005, she took part in a star-studded tsunami disaster relief telethon, which aired on NBC. She also headlined a benefit concert in Vancouver, titled "One World: The Concert for Tsunami Relief", along with fellow Canadian superstars Avril Lavigne and Bryan Adams, raising over $3.5 million for several Canadian aid agencies working in south and southeast Asia. Later that year, she performed on the Philadelphia stage of Live 8, the multi-city anniversary celebration of Live Aid and G8 summit protest coordinated by Live Aid founder Bob Geldof. In September 2004, Sarah McLachlan released the socially charged video "World On Fire".  Grammy-nominated for Best Short Form Music Video, it cost only $15 to make with the remainder of the $150,000 production budget distributed among eleven charitable organizations around the world including CARE, Engineers Without Borders, Help The Aged, Warchild, and Heifer International.A proponent of music education, the Vancouver-based singer/songwriter founded the Sarah McLachlan Foundation in 1999 to help bring music into the lives of young Canadians, especially in underserved communities. The impact of participation is profound; building self-esteem, and fostering creativity in young people through the power of music. Four years later, she established the first Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Program — an Arts Umbrella Project in Vancouver's inner city. The program offers students free music lessons, educational workshops, mentorship and support networks.Sarah McLachlan is an avid supporter of animal welfare and the ASPCA. She filmed a two-minute advertisement for the organization which featured her song "Angel", and has since helped raise about $30 million for the ASPCA since it began airing in 2003. She has also been the spokesperson for the B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, advocating the kind, caring and humane treatment of animals since 2006.Sarah McLachlan is an eight-time JUNO Award winner and three-time Grammy Award winner. Since her signing with Arista Records nearly two decades ago, every one of her albums has been certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum by CRIA and the RIAA, while five of her albums have reached the Billboard Top 15.
