Year in Review: Canada's national soccer youth program

Posted on 28 December 2015 in Canadian Soccer Association
Canada enjoyed another important year through player development from the Canadian national youth program. The highlight of the calendar year was the seventh qualification for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup finals. The qualification ensures at least three more important international youth matches for the 1996-age group at next year's Papua New Guinea 2016 finals.
Just as important, though, was the further integration and alignment of Canada's national youth system with the Men's National Team and Women's National Team programs.
In 2015, both men's and women's youth teams assembled for 267 camp days and 5,789 cumulative player days over 28 national youth projects. In all, 382 different players were featured in the Canadian national program, from official competitions to youth identification camps. On the men's side, youth prospects from all five Canadian professional teams were featured. Added to the women's side, an additional 65 players were featured in the REX program (along with the 17 that wore Canada's colours during the year).
On the men's side, Canada competed in the 2015 CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship, the CONCACAF Men's Under-17 Championship, the Pan American Men's Football Tournament (U-23s), and the CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (U-23s). Canada was just one win away from a spot at the Rio 2016 Olympics, finishing fourth at the CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
On the women's side, Canada finished fourth at the Pan American Women's Football Tournament (U-23s) and second at the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship. In that last tournament, Canada qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 - the seventh time Canada has qualified for this competition (out of eight editions).
At year's end, Michael Petrasso and Jessie Fleming were recognised as the 2015 Canadian U-20 Players of the Year while Kadin Chung and Kennedy Faulknor were recognised as the Canadian U-17 Players of the Year.
Petrasso scored four goals and two assists in 10 competitive international youth matches while also making his first team debut in the Championship with Queens Park Rangers of London, England. Fleming was Canada's youngest player at the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015, still young enough to participate in next year's FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 (even though she missed the qualifiers to be with the Women's National Team in December).
As for the 2015 highlight moment, indeed Canada's Papua New Guinea 2016 qualification came in the final month of calendar year. After winning their group, Canada battled to a 0:0 draw with Mexico in the semi-final, then won 5-4 on kicks to qualify in high drama.

CSA: A Licence coaching course in Montréal

 December 2015 in Coaching
Canada Soccer's A Licence coaching course has wrapped up in Montréal, QC, with 24 coaches completing the 11-day Part 1 phase from 7-17 December 2015. The course ensures coaches can learn and improve the environment for players in clubs across the country, with a focus on football at the international and professional levels.
"It was a pleasure to work with the coaches in the course as they have been great," said Ray Clark, Canada Soccer's Director of Coaching. "The experience and ability they brought to the course has been both invigorating and encouraging. With coaches working in our national program, Major League Soccer, professional academies, and high-performance leagues, this has been an opportunity for us to work with some of Canada's best coaches."
The courses help coaches devise, organise, conduct, and evaluate coaching sessions in advanced skills, tactics, strategies, and systems of play. Coaches will also better understand and employ the complimentary managerial and coach-related aspects appropriate to the role of the coach at the elite levels of soccer.
"We are grateful to the Impact organisation for reaching out and hosting this year's event, from the use of their facilities to the involvement of their academy players in our caching sessions and practical exams," said Clark. "They have been thoroughly professional throughout the course. Their coaching staff have been first class and we look forward to returning here next year to complete the program."
This year's Canada Soccer A Licence coaching course looks at the development in the tactical and technical areas of soccer, notably those highlighted at the recent FIFA World Cup in Brazil and FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015. The second part of the course will run next year in December 2016.

Year 2015 in Review: Canadian Men's Soccer National Team

Posted on 29 December 2015 in Men's National Team
The moment -- from a Junior Hoilett cross down the left side with two Canadian attackers in the box, a Will Johnson header rolls off Cyle Larin's back and over the line for a 1-0 lead over archrivals Honduras in 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Qualifiers at BC Place. Canada explodes into celebration, with captain Julian de Guzman the first to jump his way into Johnson's arms.
The 38th minute goal was enough to stand as the game winner, a crucial three points to kick off the CONCACAF semi-final stage on Canada's Road to Russia 2018. At the heart of victory was Canada's always-chanting 12th man, the 20,108 fans who packed BC Place in support of #CanadaRED.
Said Johnson after the match, "the crowd was fantastic. It was probably the best Canada crowd in front of which I have played in my career. The fans were unbelievable tonight. It was a real treat to come in and see a lot of red everywhere."

Canada Soccer's Men's National Team played 14 international matches in 2015, the most in a calendar year since 2000. Canada posted six wins, six draws, and two losses, with 18 goals scored and just six goals conceded.
In FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, Canada won their two-match series against Dominica (June) and Belize (September) before collecting four points (a win and a draw) in the opening two matches of the CONCACAF semi-final stage. Canada won 1:0 over Honduras on 13 November, then drew 0:0 away against El Salvador on 17 November.
The six-match round continues in 2016 with a home-and-away series against Mexico in March (including the 25 March home match at BC Place) and then an away match in Honduras and home match against El Salvador in September.
Atiba Hutchinson was Canada's man of the match in the victory over Honduras. In 2015, he played four matches at the international level and scored one goal (at home against Belize), while he has also helped club side Beşiktaş JK hold down first place in the 2015-16 Turkish standings. At year's end, Hutchinson was a BMO Canadian Players of the Year winner for the fourth time, tying the mark held by former star Dwayne De Rosario.

Head coach Benito Floro featured 55 different players over the course of the year, with De Rosario making his last two appearances before retiring as Canada's all-time leader with 22 goals in 81 international matches.
Canada's captain Julian de Guzman, meanwhile, became the country's all-time leader with 85 international appearances, surpassing the previous mark held by Paul Stalteri (84). At the other end of the all-time list, 14 different players made their first international appearances in 2015, including Junior Hoilett who earned Man of the Match honours in his debut against Ghana.
Leading the charge in attack, Tosaint Ricketts was Canada's leader with five goals in 12 matches, while Cyle Larin finished second with four goals in 11 matches (including the one famous goal off his back). Larin was runner up to Hutchinson in voting for Canadian Players of the Year honours, while at the club level he was MLS Rookie of the Year after scoring 17 times in 26 league matches.
In goal, Milan Borjan led the way with five clean sheets (including both November matches in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers), while Kenny Stamatopoulos was second with four clean sheets (while winning Team MVP honours at the CONCACAF Gold Cup).
With a goals-against average of 0.43 per match, Canada set a record for the lowest mark in the Men's National Team program history. The defensive highlight was a 564-minute shutout streak, also an all-time record for the Men's National Team.
From their positive performance in November, Canada's success story will be to continue their winning ways into 2016, with a massive home match against Mexico on Friday 25 March. With a good home crowd, Canada hopes that 12th man can propel the team beyond the semi-final stage and into the CONCACAF "Hex".

Year 2015 in Review: Canadian Women's Soccer National Team

The moment -- in added time of Canada's opening match of the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015, Christine Sinclair slots home her right-footed penalty past a diving Wang Fei into the bottom left corner of the net. A packed Commonwealth Stadium erupts as Canada takes a 1-0 lead and Christine Sinclair fist pumps her way to a congratulatory hug with jubilant head coach John Herdman.
With 53,058 in attendance and the world watching, Christine Sinclair's winning goal was Canada Soccer's Women's National Team moment of the year.
“It was an amazing atmosphere to go out and play this opening match of the World Cup in front of 50,00+ fans,” said teammate Sophie Schmidt. “The Chinese sat back and challenged us to come at them, but finally something went our way. Then Sincy, Oh Captain my Captain, came through and I’m just glad she put that in.”

Canada's run at the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 lasted three weeks, with a record-setting 54,027 at BC Place applauding Canada in the quarter-final stage on 27 June. During their run, Canada won Group A before defeating Switzerland and falling to England in the knock-out phase. Canada's sixth-place finish was their second-best finish in six trips to the FIFA Women's World Cup finals.
Along with quarter-final finishes at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Costa Rica 2014 and FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2015, Canada was the only nation in the world with top-8 finishes at FIFA's three women's competitions in 2014-15.
Christine Sinclair scored two goals and one assist at the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015, improving her career totals to nine goals and three assists in 17 matches. During the full 2015 calendar year, Sinclair led Canada with 10 goals and four assists in 18 international matches, improving her all-time record to 158 goals in 232 matches.
Her most recent goal equalised Mia Hamm for second all time among international footballers.
While Sinclair captured the top moment, the program continued its progress with stellar years by a cast of veterans, mixed in with some notable debuts before year's end. In all, Canada featured 37 different players, with Sinclair (1,578) and Kadeisha Buchanan (1,506) the leaders in minutes played. Eleven different players scored international goals for Canada, with 24 goals scored and just 10 goals conceded.
Canada's goals-against average of 0.56 per match set a record for lowest in Women's National Team program history, with all-world defender and BMO Canadian Player of the Year Buchanan leading the defence. Buchanan won the FIFA Women's World Cup Best Young Player award and was the lone centre back in the top-10 candidates list for FIFA Women's World Player of the Year prize.

In goal, Erin McLeod posted seven clean sheets, just one shy of the record shared by her (2013) and Karina LeBlanc (2010).
In 2015, LeBlanc made her last international "A" appearance for Canada, leaving international football as Canada's all-time leader in goalkeeper appearances (110) and clean sheets (47). Erin McLeod passed one of those marks with her last two matches of the year (112 matches), but still chases the record for clean sheets (41 and counting).
As for other milestones, both Melissa Tancredi and Kaylyn Kyle made their 100th appearances for Canada, while teenagers Gabrielle Carle, Kennedy Faulknor, Marie Levasseur, and Deanne Rose all made their debuts. In Faulknor and Rose, it marked the first time two Canadian 16-year old debuted in the same match (9 December), with Faulknor in fact the youngest centre back in program history.
During the course of the year, Canada also posted their 150th international victory, improving their all-time record to 155 wins, 47 draws, and 137 losses. In 339 international matches, Canada has faced 52 different opponents and played in 28 different countries. At home, Canada's record is 36 wins, 9 draws, and 23 losses in 68 matches.

LEICESTER 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY - MARTIN SAMUEL AT THE KING POWER STADIUM: Leicester will not enter 2016 as Premier League leaders after all. They are as near as. mind you, and only a fool will not take them seriously after this. They gave City a game. A proper game, a top four game, the sort of contest that unfolds when two teams with title ambitions meet. Joe Hart needed to pull off a magnificent save from a Christian Fuchs save late on to keep City in the game. Many expensive acquisitions in the visitors ranks were mightily relieved to hear the final whistle.

Is Van Gaal heading home? Dutch FA job in the pipeline if under-fire United boss gets the sack

Holland role in pipeline for Louis van Gaal if Manchester United boss is given the boot
CHRIS WHEELER: Louis van Gaal could be offered a role as technical director of the Dutch FA if he is axed by Manchester United, Holland boss Danny Blind suggested. Van Gaal's job at Old Trafford remains in jeopardy despite a more encouraging performance by United in Monday's goalless draw with Chelsea.  Afterwards, the 64-year-old declared that he would not quit but admitted that he could still be sacked if results do not improve after eight games without a win.

EPL 2015 MONDAY DEC28: Arsenal 2-0 Bournemouth: Gabriel and Mesut Ozil strikes return Gunners to winning ways and send Arsene Wenger's men top

  • Arsenal return to the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at home to Bournemouth on Monday night

Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea: Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera squander golden
MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 CHELSEA - MARTIN SAMUEL AT OLD TRAFFORD: It may not be appreciated by the disillusioned masses, but there are at least two very good reasons to keep an eye on Manchester United and Chelsea this season. The goalkeepers. David De Gea and Thibaut Courtois were quite exceptional. Faultless, one might say, and not just because they didn't have much to do. This was really quite a good game, despite those twin zeros. Manchester United were livelier than they have been for some time and Chelsea carved out some extremely good chances, although not many of them, due to the absence of a specialist goalscorer.

Arsenal 2-0 Bournemouth: Gabriel and Mesut Ozil strikes return Gunners to winning ways and send Arsene Wenger's men top

  • Goals from defender Gabriel and Mesut Ozil either side of half-time enough for Arsene Wenger's men

It would take a hard-hearted man not to have revelled in the excellence of Mesut Ozil at The Emirates.
So it was Bournemouth, not Barcelona but nonetheless, there were periods of the game in which he played at a level which not only baffled his opponents but appeared to be dazzle his team-mates as well.
After a short spell late in the first half, when he had created at least four chances in almost as many minutes, he jogged over to take a corner to be met by a standing ovation.

Never mind breaking Thierry Henry’s record of 20 assists this season; he looked as if he might break it in this game.
Amidst a surplus of sublime contributions, there was a pass for Theo Walcott on 39 minutes which appeared to defy physics, in that there seemed to be no gap through which to pass. Every corner he took utterly perplexed Bournemouth, such was his un-erring accuracy.
Yet until his contribution on 28 minutes, when he picked out Gabriel from a corner, who glided past his marker Charlie Daniels and headed home decisively, Arsenal had in fact looked a little unsure of themselves.
Bournemouth were all energy and verve, Arsenal seemingly playing with lingering memories of the Southampton horror show. Marc Pugh and Daniels down the left looked to have the run of Hector Bellerin early on and Arsenal were in the unaccustomed role of conceding possession to their opponents.
Yet when the German took control of proceedings, it was as though the game had moved into a different dimension, one to which only Ozil was truly attuned and which made the match almost unplayable for the team without him.

There was the corner for the goal, the pass for Walcott, but there was also another corner, on 40 minutes, which Gabriel flicked on the post. Amusingly, the ball rebounded off the post onto the face of Per Mertesacker, who was two yards out and apparently so alarmed to see the ball heading in his direction he managed to direct it past the post rather than inside it.
A minute later there was yet another threaded through ball for Walcott, which Artur Boruc did well to smother.
Bournemouth promised to rally in the second half and Joshua King really should have equalised for Bournemouth, dwelling on his chance and allowing Gabriel a last-ditch, saving tackle. Yet that man again proved the difference.

He weighed up his options on 64 minutes, exchanged a lovely one-two with Olivier Giroud, before finishing through the legs of Boruc.
It is only his eighth goal of the season and that is the area in which he has to improve, if he is to become the kind of player who can challenge for the Ballon D’Or.
But at the rate he is going, that may not matter for Arsenal come the end of the season, especially if Alexis Sanchez can get fit.
Arsenal are in an un-nerving position for their supporters: not only are they top of the league, although perhaps only for 24 hours, but they look to be the team hitting their stride at the right time.
We’ve been here before, of course, and there’s always the potential for them to play like they did at Southampton. But if Ozil can sustain his form and his team-mates can provide adequate supporting roles, those days are look much more like aberrations rather than the norm.

Klopp is reluctant to put pressure on Benteke, who cost Liverpool £32.5million when he arrived from Aston Villa in July, but he has spoken at length with the 25-year-old and has reinforced what he wants to see from him in the future.

Christmas sales shoppers were given a treat as the defending champions, who travelled up to Manchester on Sunday and spent the night in a nearby hotel, decided a good stretch in the open air would blow away the cobwebs with several hours remaining before the evening kick-off.
