Canada MEN sOCCER U-17 squad selected for CONCACAF U-17 Championship

Canada’s Men’s U-17 Team has a tough road as they chase history at the 2015 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship that is about set to get underway in San Pedro Sula, HON.
Head Coach Sean Fleming has selected the 20 players who will have the difficult task of getting Canada out of Group B towards the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015.
“We know with the qualifying procedure how difficult it will be with games every third day with the heat,” said Fleming. “And we know the quality of the opponents. It’s a very tough group compared to the other group, in my opinion, and it’s going to be five very good quality games.”
Canada opens action on Saturday 28 February against Haiti (kickoff 19.30 local / 20.30 ET / 17.30 PT). After that, the team has two days off between each game against Costa Rica (3 March 19.30 local), Mexico (6 March 19.30 local), St. Lucia (9 March 19.30 local), and Panama (12 March 19.30 local).

Canada has qualified for the last two FIFA U-17 World Cup competitions. They also qualified to back-to-back FIFA U-17 World Championships in 1993 and 1995 so the team hopes to head into uncharted territory as the team that gets Canada into the tournament for the third time in a row for the first time in its history.
“It’s going to take a very disciplined, committed team effort,” said Fleming, of what it will take to get the team back to the FIFA U-17 World Cup. “I think that we are strong as a team, and that we will be difficult to play against. If we become individuals, it would be not to our advantage to do so.”
All of Canada’s group stage games take place at 19.30 local time (20.30 ET / 17.30 PT) at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula, HON. The two-group winners advance to the finals with their spot at the FIFA U-17 World Cup assured while the second and third placed teams in each group will play off for the two remaining spots.

A never-before-seen Vanity Fair photo of the Oscar winner wrapped in nothing but giant Colombian red-tailed boa constrictor is bound to be the hottest thing you'll see all day!
Photographer Patrick Demarchelier snapped the shot – an homage to the 1981 Richard Avedon Vogue portrait of Nastassja Kinski – back in July and just released it on Friday. The shot was part of the actress' November 2014 cover shoot, but was never used.
"Jennifer has the perfect combination of strength, sexuality, and humor, and, above all, tomboy to pull this off," V.F. fashion and style director Jessica Diehl said.
"The Hunger Games" star did have one scary moment, the mag revealed. At one point during the session, the python "took a fancy to her neck" (can you blame a snake for trying?!) and was quickly put back in his box.
The racy, slithery Jen shot will appear in Vanity Fair's March 2015 issue.

Women’s and Men’s Teams Face Tough Tests Early On as Basketball Schedule Released
TORONTO, February 5, 2015  — The Pan Am basketball schedule is now online, meaning Team Canada enthusiasts can now buy tickets to watch Canada's basketball teams take on top competition such as Argentina and Venezuela in preliminary action.
The Canadian men’s basketball team will see a tough test in the first round of the tournament. They face Argentina —  the third-ranked team in the world — in their second game. In another tough contest, the fast-rising Canadian women’s team, who finished in fifth place at the 2014 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Championship, will face the 14th world-ranked team, Argentina.
“It’s exciting to have the Pan Am Games in my hometown of Toronto this summer,” said Andrew Wiggins, 2014 NBA 1st round draft pick. “Having the opportunity to play at home is very special for Team Canada and the country.”
The men’s basketball competitions are expected to be a highlight of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games, with several NBA players expected to suit up.
“It’s always a privilege to play at home, we know we can compete with the best in the world and we plan to show that this summer in Toronto,” said Jay Triano, head coach of the men’s national team who is also an assistant coach for the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. “This is an important competition for our young talented team.”
The Canadian women also see this as an important stop along the way for both teams who are trying to qualify this summer for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
“2014 ended on a high note for us, finishing 5th at the FIBA World Championships,” said Lisa Thomaidis, head coach for the Canadian women’s team. “This will be another special year for us as we will have the privilege of competing on home soil twice; at the Pan Am Games in Toronto and hosting the FIBA Americas Women’s Championship in Edmonton.”
The battle for medals has been hotly contested in recent years. Brazil’s men’s team won three consecutive Pan Am gold medals until the 2011 Guadalajara Games, when Puerto Rico took the title in both the men's and women's competitions, with Mexico placing second. The U.S. won bronze in the men's competition, while Brazil took bronze in the women's.
Canadian basketball fans will see familiar faces in the tournament, including Toronto Raptors star Greivis Vasquez, who will be competing with his native Venezuelan team. Vasquez helped his country qualify for the Games last summer.
“Growing up, I always wanted to play basketball for my national team and the Pan Am Games were always a great opportunity to compete against the most elite players in the world. It’s really special to be competing for the country I love, in the city that’s made me and my family feel at home and shown me so much love since I arrived,” said Vasquez. “Everyone knows Canada’s national team is on the rise, and it’s going to be a really competitive tournament environment all around. It will be a great time for the fans in this city to see a different competitive side of basketball that is all about national pride.”
In the tournament, the Canadian women’s team will be part of Group B and will play:
  • Venezuela on July 16 (BK002)
  • Argentina on July 17 (BK004)
  • Cuba on July 18 (BK006)
The semifinals will be played on July 19, and the gold-medal match will take place July 20 (BK010).
Of the eight teams in the men’s tournament, six are among the top-25 FIBA world-ranked teams. The Canadian men’s team will play:
  • Dominican Republic on July 21 (BK012)
  • Argentina on July 22 (BK014)
  • Mexico on July 23 (BK016)
The semifinals will take place on July 24, and the gold-medal game on July 25 (BK020).

WOMEN SOCCER IN CANADA: League1 And OSA Announce 2015 Women's Division



                                    
VAUGHAN, ON (Wednesday, January 28, 2015) – League1 Ontario, in partnership with the Ontario Soccer Association, is pleased to announce the exciting addition of a women's semi-professional division for 2015.
The inaugural 2015 League1 Ontario's women's division will be comprised of six organizations, each chosen through a standards-based application process with specific attention directed to the development of women's soccer in Ontario.
“This is another proud day for women's soccer in our province and in Canada,” OSA President Ron Smale said. “With the 2015 Women's FIFA World Cup in Canada, the launch of a semi-pro women's league in Ontario will provide more opportunities for our female athletes by providing a higer level of competition, and a pathway for soccer excellence.
As a provincial body, this is another step in our ongoing commitment and dedication to improving the landscape of soccer in Ontario and Canada. I am looking forward to an exciting and rewarding season.”
“The inclusion of a women's division has been a priority from the outset of this project so it is incredibly gratifying to make this announcement today,” League1 Ontario Chairman Dino Rossi said.
“Providing a vibrant and professional competition and training environment for the best female players in the province of Ontario will pay significant dividends for the growth of women's soccer over the long term.”
The six League1 Ontario women's teams are as follows:
  • ANB Futbol
  • Durham United FC
  • North Mississauga SC
  • Pro Stars FC
  • Sanjaxx Lions
  • Vaughan SC
ANB Futbol, Pro Stars FC and Sanjaxx Lions are all OSA Recognized Non-Club (ORNCA) academies.
“I think it was the perfect time for the OSA to launch this league. I believe in Canada we have the ability to launch one of the best female leagues in the world, as we have the talent pool of players, coaches and leaders,” said Josef Komlodi, Academy Technical Director of Pro Stars FC.
 “I believe this league to be the ideal platform for young Canadian talent to grow and turn our game into a world class performance. At Pro Stars, we have recruited some of the best coaches in the female game, we have a very good product for the field, and I think our fans will enjoy the quality of play.”
The remaining three are all OSA members. Vaughan Soccer Club and Durham United FC – operated by the Pickering Soccer Club – are also members of the Ontario Player Development League (OPDL).
“We continue to be in active conversation with other organizations that wish to join the League1 Ontario women's division in 2015,” Rossi added. “We hope to have more good news to add soon.”
The League1 women's division will kick off in May 2015.  The location for the inaugural match and the teams that will take part are to be announced.
