Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Toronto, Ontario

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

April 2011 is the inaugural Hispanic-Canadian Heritage Month in Ontario!

Did you know that more than 5,200 TDSB students speak Spanish as their first language? Well, they do and this is why the TDSB is celebrating the cultures and traditions of those of Hispanic heritage. This month students, staff and the community will showcase the valuable contributions of Hispanic-Canadians to society!

Schools will host events that reflect the unique history of a people with an incredible variety of histories, cultures and experiences. Hispanic culture originates in more than 21 countries.

Inclusive Schools is putting together a variety of resources and activities to support teaching and learning. These resources are not limited to April. They will highlight some of TDSB’s events, as well as those recognized by the city, the province and the federal government for Hispanic-Canadian Heritage Month. Some of the components and features available are:

•An interactive online calendar (Primary/Junior and Intermediate Senior)

•A Hispanic Heritage Resource Guide for Educators

Congratulations and much appreciation to the TDSB/TCDSB Hispanic-Canadian Heritage Month Joint Steering Committee. We’d also like to thank Toronto’s Hispanic/Latino community for their leadership and hard work in planning and organizing everything this month.
