Former Spice Girl Says Women in Pop are Too Sexy


Melanie Chisholm, formerly known as Sporty Spice, thinks today's pop stars are giving up their dignity

Former Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm thinks today's female pop stars should rein in their sexuality.

Chisholm, a.k.a. Mel C., a.k.a. Sporty Spice made it big with the Spice Girls in the 1990s, spreading a message of "Girl Power." At the time, some parents groups were concerned that little girls were emulating the Spice's sexy outfits and attitudes. But they were tame compared with today's stars like Rihanna.

Chisholm laments the behaviour of women in contemporary pop to British magazine Seven Days, saying, 'The majority of the most successful artists in the world today are women and a lot of those women are very sexual performers. It's nothing new… now it seems acceptable… We are seeing the signs that young people are being affected by the overexposure of sexual images. Whether it is young girls and their self-esteem and body image or how young boys see women.

'It is the responsibility of parents and adults to protect children. I'm not interested in a slagging match, but why do so many young women want to express themselves in a sexual way? Sex sells…

'It is great to see women doing so well in the pop music business. The Spice Girls came up against certain barriers in the early days. We are proud of these women doing well, but maybe it is at the expense of their dignity.'

The Spice Girls formed in the early nineties and broke up in 1998. They reunited in 2007 and released the single Headlines (Friendship Never Ends). It should be noted that, unlike fellow Spices Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown and Geri Halliwell, neither Chisholm nor Emma Bunton stripped down to their bra or underpants for the accompanying video.

Rumours that Fleetwood Mac will hit the road in 2012 are true. They just don't know when or where yet.

'We're so disorganized as a band, I don't know what to tell you,' drummer Mick Fleetwood tells Billboard.com. 'All we know is we're working next year. I'll get a phone call that we're going to start rehearsing — usually in a blind panic because we leave everything (until) way too late. But we're all up for touring in the early summer of next year, I think, and once we start we're much like U2 and the (Rolling) Stones in terms of workload. We basically play until no one wants to book us anymore.'

Singer-guitarist Lindsey Buckingham adds, 'There has been nothing, no time frame yet of any kind. We're just gonna have to wait until probably the first of the year to sit down and figure out some kind of schedule for that.'

The 1970s superstars last toured in 2009 with the Unleashed Tour.

In the interim, group members have been working on solo projects.

There has been talk of Fleetwood Mac recording an album but Billboard reports that Fleetwood says it's not likely to happen before the tour.

'On the face of it we won't have time to make an album, which is somewhat of a shame,' he notes. 'But I think what we can do, and I hope it does happen, is we can get in and have fun doing two or three (songs), which is so 'now' with all the Internet stuff and people shoving out EPs and separate tracks. So that would probably be our best effort to get three or four new songs before we go out on the road, which I really hope we do.'
