TENNIS CANADA 2013: REBECCA MARINO STEPS AWAY FROM TENNIS

Rebecca Marino, seen at the Australian Open in January, reached a high of No. 38 in the women's rankings in 2011.

Montreal, February 20, 2013 – Former world no. 38 Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) announced Wednesday that she will be stepping away from tennis.

“I have decided to step away from tennis," said Rebecca Marino. "This was not an easy decision, but there are a number of factors that have led me to this. Factors that are part of our society and that I am more than open to discuss, which I plan to do moving forward, because I know it’s part of my growth process.”

After enjoying a breakthrough season in 2011 that saw her reach her first WTA final in Memphis and reach the third round at Roland-Garros, Marino decided to take a break from the game in February of 2012. The 22-year-old made her much-anticipated return seven months later and captured the singles title at the $25,000 Rock Hill Challenger in just her fifth tournament back, a run which included consecutive victories over her compatriots Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC) and Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON) in the final. Marino played six tournaments this season including the Australian Open and returned to Memphis this week, the site of one of her career highlights, to play her final event before deciding to step away.

Marino trained at Tennis Canada’s National Tennis Centre for two years from 2010 to 2011 before returning to her home base in Vancouver. She posted two Top 20 wins over Marion Bartoli and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in addition to winning three consecutive Challenger titles during the Fall indoor hard court season in 2010.
