ROGERS CUP 2013: Rogers Cup presented by National Bank - Media Guide & Information

We are very pleased to welcome you to the 2013 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank at Rexall Centre on the campus of York University.

This event annually brings Canada to the centre stage of international sport. The third-oldest tournament in all of tennis, behind only Wimbledon and the US Open, some of the greatest players in history have been crowned champion. Steffi Graf, Justine Henin, Martina Hingis, Martina Navratilova, and Monica Seles are among the many retired legends to have lifted the Canadian trophy. The past few years have seen some of the tennis world's current brightest stars capture Rogers Cup titles, including 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, 15-time Slam champion Serena Williams, and former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.

For the third consecutive year, our two tournaments will be virtually combined, with the men's event in Montreal occurring simultaneously with ours. Reporters working from the media centre in Toronto will have access to all of the information coming out of the men's tournament in Montreal, including the ability to watch press conferences with the ATP World Tour players via video technology.

On this page, you will find our media guide in an easy-to-access format, containing background information, statistics, and other resources to aid in your coverage of the event. Click here to also view our Fan Guide, which contains further details on the tournament. Other pertinent information, requiring updating, will be distributed when it becomes available throughout the course of the week both on-site and online.

If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact members of the Tennis Canada media relations staff or drop by the George Gross Media Centre. Representatives from the WTA will also be available to answer any special queries or requests.

We appreciate your valued coverage and support of this Canadian event. Rogers Cup presented by National Bank is owned and operated by Tennis Canada, and as a non-profit organization, all net surplus is directed towards tennis development.

Please enjoy the world-class tennis action and we wish you a very pleasant and memorable stay at Rexall Centre.

Sincerely,

What is Rogers Cup presented by National Bank?
Rogers Cup presented by National Bank is a prestigious professional tennis tournament organized by Tennis Canada. Since 1881 for the men and 1892 for the women, the best players in the world have showcased their skills on Canadian courts. Only Wimbledon and the US Open have longer histories than the major Canadian stop, which is acknowledged by the tennis world to be one of the best-run tournaments on the Tour. Classified as a Premier 5 event on the WTA schedule, Rogers Cup presented by National Bank offers more than US $2 million in prize money and attracts the biggest stars in women's tennis year after year.

Montreal and Toronto share the task of hosting, in alternation, the best men's and women's players in the world. The two Canadian tournaments are "virtually combined" which means they are played at the same time, during the same week. So, from August 3-11, 2013 the women will be in Toronto while the men will play in Montreal.

Petra Kvitova is the defending champion, as last year in Montreal she captured her biggest title of the 2012 season by defeating Li Na in an exciting final to win her first Rogers Cup trophy. It was also the 2011 Wimbledon winner's first title on North American soil. Two years ago, when the women were last in Toronto, Serena Williams triumphed over Samantha Stosur to clinch her second Rogers Cup title - 10 years after winning her first, also in Toronto. The final ended up being a preview of the US Open championship match, which featured Stosur exacting revenge on Williams to win her first Slam.

The impressive list of past champions for the Canadian stop on the professional tennis circuit includes such legendary names as Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Martina Hingis, Justine Henin, and Kim Clijsters. Faye Urban Mlacek is the last Canadian to have won the trophy on home soil, as she captured both the singles and doubles (with Vicki Berner) championships in 1969.

What is a session?
The tournament consists of 15 sessions of tennis.
Qualifying matches are played on the first weekend with players ranked outside the Top 50 vying for one of 12 spots in the main draw. From Monday through Saturday there are two sessions per day, a matinee and an evening session. There are two to four matches per session, a number that could vary depending on the length of matches and any delays due to weather or injury. The finals of the singles and doubles are played in the final session on Sunday.  Tickets for the matinee session are not valid for the evening session on centre court, but ticket holders are welcome to stay on the grounds and watch matches being played on other courts.
What session or day is the best to attend?
Every fan finds a different day or session to his or her liking. There are more matches earlier in the week and during matinee sessions. As the week progresses, the excitement builds as the field narrows and the remaining players fight to become the next Rogers Cup presented by National Bank Champion.
Can I buy a ticket to watch a particular player?
Rogers Cup presented by National Bank is an elimination tennis tournament, and as such the schedule of play is determined each evening for the following day. Therefore, it is not possible to purchase tickets in advance and guarantee a specific player will play in that session.
How are the draw and schedule made?
The official draw is created the weekend prior to the start of the main draw. The players' names are randomly selected and placed on the official drawboard, with the Top 2 seeds already placed at opposite ends of the draw. Once the draw is determined, the schedule of play is made daily by the tournament director, tournament referee and WTA supervisor. Please check rogerscup.com nightly throughout the tournament for the next day's schedule of play.
If I don’t want to be looking into the sun, or would like to sit in the shade, where would be the best place to sit?
During the matinee session the sun is almost directly overhead and there is no shade. During the evening session while the sun is setting the preference is to sit on the west side facing east. The Rexall Centre is an outdoor stadium so remember to bring your sunscreen and a hat as temperatures can get very hot.
Where is the best place to sit?
Would you prefer to sit on a side, corner or end of the court? Each has its advantages and it really depends on personal preference.  Click here to take a virtual tour to find your personal preference.
Where do the umpire and players sit?
They sit on the west side facing east.
Where do the players enter the stadium?
The players enter the stadium from court level in the southeast corner.
Can I get a grounds pass?
Grounds passes may be purchased at the Box Office only for the day on Monday, August 5, Tuesday, August 6, Wednesday, August 7 and Thursday August 8. Grounds passes allow access to all outside courts and are good for the entire day. There is no access to Centre Court.
If I require a wheelchair seat or other disabled access seating, how do I order?

What does my ticket entitle me to?
For the main draw, we sell tickets for reserved Centre Court seats only. Your ticket also allows access to matches on other courts including the Grandstand during the session your ticket is valid for, however this seating is unreserved.
What is the Grandstand?
The Grandstand is located at the south end of the site and will host a number of marquee matches throughout the week. It is the second show court next to Centre Court and seating works on a first come first serve basis during the main draw.
How many matches will I see with my ticket?
From Monday through Friday, there will be a minimum of three matches scheduled on Centre Court in the matinee session and a minimum of two matches scheduled in the evening session. Inclement weather and other factors beyond our control may alter this schedule. Both singles and doubles matches are included in some sessions.
What if I lose my ticket?
Tickets can be replaced for the original ticket purchaser at a cost of $5.00 per ticket and picked up at the Will Call booth beside the Box Office.
What if it rains?
Every attempt will be made to play any/all scheduled matches in the event of inclement weather. If the rain stops, to resume play, courts will be dried and the session will continue. If a session is cancelled due to rain, paid session tickets may be exchanged for a following day session ticket as noted in the Terms and Conditions.

It’s raining, my session of tennis is about to start and I am still at home…We do ask that you make your way to the Rexall Centre. The delay could be four hours or it could be 20 minutes, we never know. It is best that, if you don’t live close by, you are on site because once it stops raining it only takes 30 minutes to dry off the courts and resume play.

It’s raining and I am at the Rexall Centre…Please be patient. We will keep you updated around the site and through our closed circuit television screens.  It is best to stay on site or remain close by because once it stops raining it only takes 30 minutes to dry off the courts and resume play.
