East York school principal charged with assaulting Grade 5 student

 

  • An East York elementary school principal has been charged with physically assaulting a Grade 5 student on school grounds last month.
    The alleged assault happened Sept. 25.

    Sean Hume, principal of Chester Elementary School, turned himself in to police Wednesday morning accompanied by his lawyer, Toronto police spokesperson Gary Long said.
    Police declined to provide details about the alleged assault.
    Hume was placed on home assignment shortly after the incident was reported, Superintendent Lucy Giannotta said Wednesday in a letter sent to parents at the school, near Pape and Cosburn Aves.

    Hume will remain on home assignment, pending the outcome of the charges.
    “While it is important to remember that laying criminal charges does not constitute guilt, and that a person is innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law, we also cannot and do not take these allegations lightly,” the letter reads.
    The Toronto District School Board declined to comment beyond the letter provided.
    “Supports will be in place for students who are upset by the situation,” the letter says.
