What’s happening in Toronto the weekend of August 24-25: road closures, transit, weather and events



We’re approaching the end of August, but there are still plenty of interesting events happening around the city to help take advantage of the remaining summer days.
Here’s everything you need to know to make the most out of this weekend.

Road closures
Parts of the Don Valley Parkway will be closed from 12:01 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday for construction. The closures include the DVP north from the Gardiner to Royal Dr. and the DVP south from Gerrard St. E. to Queen St. E.

The TTC has two subway closures planned for this weekend, so be sure to plan accordingly.
Line 1 will be closed from Sheppard-Yonge station to St. Clair station on Saturday and Sunday for track work. Shuttle buses will operate, and regular service will resume Monday morning.
Service on Line 2 between St. George and Broadview stations will start late on Sunday, beginning at noon, to accommodate beam replacement on the Prince Edward Viaduct.
Weather
Summer might be winding down, but this weekend should still offer plenty of opportunities for fun in the sun, according to Environment Canada.
Saturday will be mainly sunny, with a high of 25, a humidex of 26 and a UV index of 7. Night will be clear, dipping down to a low of 13 C, so consider bringing a sweater or light jacket if you plan to be out all day.
Sunday will see clear skies all day and into the night, with a high of 26 C during the day and a low of 15 C in the evening.

Events
Canadian National Exhibiton (CNE)
In addition to its standard offerings of games, carnival rides, wacky foods and musical performances, the CNE’s second weekend will feature some special exhibits as well.
If you’re into street food, be sure to check out the fair’s annual Food Truck Frenzy on Princes’ Boulevard in front of the Beanfield and Enercare Centres to sample tasty treats from dozens of vendors. The frenzy will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
For brewing coinnosseurs looking to wet their whistles, the annual Craft Beer Fest will run within the Food Truck Frenzy, featuring more than a dozen master brewers with locally crafted beers. The beer fest runs from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.
The CNE, also known as the Ex, runs until Sept. 2 at Exhibition Place. Tickets are $19.99 for adults and $16.99 if bought in advance and for kids and seniors.
The fair grounds are open daily from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m.
Tamil Fest 2019 — Saturday and Sunday
Tamil Fest is the largest street festival in Scarborough. This celebration of culture and cuisine will feature Tamil cuisine from more than 20 food vendors, street performances that will showcase local Tamil talent and a youth and children zone with interactive educational exhibits about Tamil culture and history.
The festival takes place on Markham Rd. between Passmore and McNicoll Aves. and will run all day Saturday and Sunday.
Toronto Cider Festival — Friday and Saturday
Celebrating its 5th anniversary, the Toronto Cider Festival at Sherbourne Common features more than 30 cider brewers from across Ontario. Along with plenty of craft cider to sample, the event will have an outdoor firepit, waterfront game zone, photo exhibit, line dancing and live musical performances.
The festival runs from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday.
Fan Expo — Thursday to Sunday
Canada’s largest comics, sci-fi, horror, anime and gaming event is back for its 24th year. The four-day long convention celebrates everything pop culture, attracting thousands of fans from around the world. This year’s celebrity guests include John Travolta, Jeff Goldblum and Zachary Levi, as well as cast members from Kim’s Convenience and Corner Gas. Attendees can enjoy celebrity photo and autograph sessions, panels, workshops, costume contests, escape rooms and more.
The convention is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Tickets range from $30 to $50 for individual days or $135 for the full weekend.
