Friday’s two-alarm apartment fire on Dovercourt Rd. has claimed its third young victim, a Toronto Police detective at 14 Division told the Toronto Star on Saturday afternoon.
Det. Const. Don Bai said Saturday that Katie Charron, 21, died at Mount Sinai early Saturday morning. Two men and two women in their early 20s were caught in the blaze; one man died on the scene on Friday and two women have since died in hospital, with the fourth person caught in the blaze, Ethan Leal, 21, now recovering.
“His injuries are relatively minor,” said Bai. “He’s in quite good condition in hospital.”
Bai confirmed Jordan Boyer, 22, was pronounced dead on scene at 1068 Dovercourt Rd. on Friday morning; his friend Alysia Graham, 21, died later that day. All four of the victims grew up in Georgetown, Ont.
“Both Jordan and Alysia were just completely talented, artistic,” said high-school friend Danielle Forget, who worked with Graham at a grocery store when they were teenagers.
“He was such a funny, funny, funny guy. I didn’t know anyone who didn’t like either of them. It’s such a cliché thing to say but it’s true.”
The foursome lived together and “they were all very heavily into photography,” said Forget.
Kristi Graham, Alysia’s mother, said Saturday she is trying to “keep herself distracted” after losing her daughter just three days before Alysia’s 22nd birthday and a day after her own. She said Alysia had a glowing personality like none other.
“She was very positive and outgoing. She lit up the room when she walked in,” she told the Star from Vistek, a photography shop on Queen St. E. where her daughter had been working since last August. “She and I were probably more like friends or sisters like mother and daughter. We did everything together until she moved to Toronto last year. I miss her a ton.”
Nine trucks carrying 35 firefighters responded to the call at Dovercourt Rd., near Dupont St., at 3:10 a.m. on Friday. Crews recovered a smoke alarm in the debris that will be sent for testing to see if it was functioning when the fire erupted, said Capt. Adrian Ratushniak.
Fire prevention officers, who investigated the scene after most of the flames were extinguished an hour later, found no fire-code violations, Ratushniak said. One firefighter was injured in battling the blaze.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is now investigating the cause of the fire, which officials believe started in the shared living room and kitchen area. The apartment was divided into a common area with four separate bedrooms.
The apartment is located above an empty store that hasn’t been used in more than five years, Ratushniak said.
“It’s such a tragedy, any kind of fire,” said Ratushniak, “but these were young adults. They haven’t even started their lives yet.”
