Winnipeg: Canada-USA match just around the corner
Canada will host USA in a Women's International Friendly match in Winnipeg, a host city for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™. The match will be played on Sunday 8 May 2014 with a local 19.00 kick-off time.
“We are thrilled to bring world-class women’s soccer back to Winnipeg and look forward to giving the fans in Manitoba a chance to come and support Canada’s Women’s National Team on the road to Canada 2015," said Peter Montopoli, General Secretary of the Canadian Soccer Association.
This marks the first women's national team home match in Winnipeg since 1990, when Canada in fact hosted its first-ever international match in the Manitoba capital.
”We are pleased to host this important match and give Manitoba soccer fans a chance to see some of the best players in the world,” said Minister of Tourism, Culture, Heritage, Sport and Consumer Protection Ron Lemieux. “This kind of event will highlight the game of soccer, and the amazing facility of Investors Group Field that will be used to host the game.”
“Every time we come into these games against USA, we want to be the team that stops them, stops their unbeaten streak,” said Canada’s Women’s National Team Head Coach John Herdman. “They’re an absolute machine but at some point someone’s going to trip them up. We are hoping that with our fans behind us and cheering us on, we can do that in Winnipeg in May.”

New campaigns open in USA
Women’s club football headlines over the weekend were dominated by high-profile leagues of USA and Sweden beginning their new campaigns. Germany witnessed the two cup finalists determined, while there were big wins for the nation’s UEFA Women’s Champions League hopefuls. Finally to Japan where local powerhouse INAC Kobe Leonessa belatedly kick-started their season following a couple of shock defeats.
Hopes were high for National Women’s Soccer League debutants Houston Dash but a healthy crowd of over 8,000 went home unhappy as reigning champions Portland Thorns edged a 1-0 win. Midfielder Allie Long scored the game’s decisive goal in the first half while FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year Nadine Angerer maintained a cleansheet on her NWSL debut as the highly-regarded Thorns held on for all three points. Elsewhere a couple of imports claimed the goalscoring honours. Scotland’s Kim Little bagged a double as Seattle Reign eased past Boston Breakers with a 2-0 scoreline. Spain’s Vicky Losada also scored twice as Western New York Flash, who finished last season at the top of the league ladder, secured a 3-1 victory over Washington Spirit.

Dickenmann: Qualifying would be a dream
“Being able to travel through time”, was the answer Lara Dickenmann posted on her website when asked which superpower she would most like to have. And were this not beyond the realm of possibility, the midfielder’s first port of call would probably be this time next year, to see whether her country had qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™.
The Swiss are not currently in danger of missing out on women's football’s flagship event, however, and remain firmly on course to qualify for their first-ever Women’s World Cup in North America next summer. In fact, the Eidgenossen are yet to lose a match in their qualifying campaign and occupy pole position in Group 3 after six matches. Their progress might have surprised many, but Dickenmann believes several key factors easily explain her country’s recent success.“We have a very good coach and fantastic staff at our disposal," Dickenmann explained in an exclusive interview with FIFA.com. "Our previous coach was also very good, but now we have someone at the helm with international experience, great knowledge of the game and who has that German mentality. We can really go places with Martina Voss-Tecklenburg in charge.”

FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015™
The FIFA Women's World Cup is held every four years, with the next edition to be played in Canada in 2015. It marks the first major sporting event hosted in Canada from coast to coast, with matches to be played in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montréal and Moncton. The FIFA Women's World Cup will feature the 24 best women's football teams in the world.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ will be preceded one year earlier by the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, one of two FIFA women’s youth tournaments. The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup returns to Canada for the first time since 2002. The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014 will feature 16 teams featuring players born 1994 or later.
The National Organising Committee for the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 features Victor Montagliani (chair), Steven Reed, Janine Helland, Doug Redmond, Clare Rustad, Walter Sieber and Peter Montopoli.
