More than a few stars of the future have come through past editions of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Two notable soccer players from past editions are Canada 2002 all-stars Erin McLeod and Christine Sinclair.
In fact, from the most recent Women's International Friendly match in Vancouver on 18 June, there were nine Canadians on the pitch that had come through past editions: McLeod, Sinclair, Josée Bélanger, Jonelle Filigno, Kaylyn Kyle, Adriana Leon, Sophie Schmidt (Canada's goal scorer), Desiree Scott, and Emily Zurrer.
Germany, meanwhile, featured 14 alumni from past FIFA U-20 Women's World Cups in the 18 June match, including former adidas Golden Ball winners
Dzsenifer Marozsán (Japan 2012) and Alexandra Popp (Germany 2010). Goal scorers Lena Lotzen and Simone Laudehr were both former FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup all-stars.
As for other past FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup footballers that have grown up to be stars with their national teams, there is Brazil's Marta, England's Stephanie Houghton, Korea Republic's Ji So-Yun, New Zealand's Ali Riley, Spain's Verónica Boquete, and USA's Lauren Holiday and Alex Morgan.
Incidentally, Canada's 18 June match also featured a preview to the future with five teenagers eligible for this summer's FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014: Kadeisha Buchanan, Jessie Fleming, Ashley Lawrence, Rebecca Quinn and Sura Yekka all suited up for Canada's national "A" side.
