With 11 goals in two matches, Canada was expected to close out the group phase of the CONCACAF Girls’ Under-15 Championship with another offensive clinic, but instead was stifled by a determined Haitian defense.
While Canada, once again, dominated possession, Haiti countered, equalizing the match less than three minutes after Lauren Raimondo gave Canada the lead, in the 12th minute, with a shot from outside of the 18-yard box.
“It was a frustrating match, said Head Coach Beverly Priestman. “I’m disappointed we didn’t score more. We kept the ball, but needed to create more final acts and covert them into goals.”
But despite the result, Priestman believes there are plenty of positives. “This is a tick in the box for the development of these players. We are going to encounter teams like this again in the future. Teams that are just as quick, strong and can counter attack quickly, so this was a massive lesson for these girls, which, in the end, is what this is all about.”
The important thing going forward says Priestman is for the Team to maintain its quality. When situations like this arise again “we need to be passionate, while wearing the maple leaf and remember to keep doing the things we do well, regardless of what the opposition does.”
Even with the tie against Haiti, Canada advances to the quarterfinal as winner
