Ballon d’Or – Robin Van Persie Infographic

The Ballon d’Or is the most prestigious individual award in soccer. The honor was first handed out in 1956 with Stanley Matthews taking home the prize and Lionel Messi taking home that last 4 trophies from 2009-2012. Needless to say every name to win the honor is a household name in the soccer world from Alfredo Di Stéfano to George Best to Johan Cruyff to Franz Beckenbauer to Michel Platini to Ronaldo (it is really absurd to try and pick out the names of the greats because they all are)!
The nominations are in and FIFA has selected a 23-player short list for this year’s award. Who will take home the prize? Can Messi make it a five-peat? Or will Cristiano Ronaldo take home his second? The Portugal international won in 2008 when he was still at Manchester United? Or can Franck Ribery steal the show after helping Bayern Munich to a treble? Or will it be another darkhorse coming to take top honors? The Ballon d’Or was the idea of France Football magazine. One of the most respected publications on the game in Europe, they presented it each year. In 2009 the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year awards were combined and called the FIFA Ballon d’Or.
The winner will be announced at the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala at the Zurich Kongresshaus on 13 January 2014.
