WOMEN'S SOCCER: CANADA 1 UNITED STATES 1 - Buchanan a force against USA, leading Canada WNT’s youth movement

Going up against some of the biggest names in women’s soccer, Canada’s Women’s National Team had a back line where three of the four defenders were teenagers.

And for 77 minutes, the best team in the world had no answers.

Already an emerging force at the back, Kadeisha Buchanan showed herself at the other end of the field as she put Canada in front late in the first half. On top of that, she took American star striker Abby Wambach largely out of the game for the third game in a row.

Buchanan could become the best centre back in the world—that is, if she isn’t already.

“She’s the Sinclair of defenders,” mused Head Coach John Herdman after the game. “She’s that good. And we’ll find some areas to keep working on but she’s got the chance to be the best player in the world in her position.”

The longer it went on, the more it looked like Canada would pick up their first win over the Americans in 13 years but all credit to the Americans as they’re one resilient group and they find ways to salvage results and in this case, they salvaged a 1:1 draw.

Sydney Leroux was in the right place to score after Rebecca Quinn’s glancing header couldn’t clear an American cross.
But with a team that started with three teenagers and ended the game with four, Canada’s showing that exciting times lie ahead.

Buchanan is still eligible to play this summer at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 and if she can keep one of the best strikers in the world contained, while providing an offensive force at the other end, one can only imagine what she’s capable of when she suits up at the u-20 level this summer.

“This team’s only going to get better,” said Herdman. “That’s the exciting thing for me. It’s part of the DNA we want to shift in Canada and these girls are leading it.”

#Canada2015 Qualifiers - UEFA
The 42 European teams have been divided into seven groups of six teams. Each team plays 10 matches from September 2013 to September 2014. The winner of each group qualifies for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 while a playoff amongst four second-place teams (25 October and 27 November 2014) will determine an eighth qualified team for Canada 2015.

Les 42 équipes européennes ont été divisées en sept groupes de six équipes. Chaque équipe jouera 10 matchs entre septembre 2013 et septembre 2014. FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015™

The FIFA Women's World Cup™ is held every four years, with the next edition to be played in Canada in 2015. It marks the first major sporting event hosted in Canada from coast to coast, with matches to be played in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montréal and Moncton. The FIFA Women's World Cup will feature the 24 best women's football teams in the world.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ will be preceded one year earlier by the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, one of two FIFA women’s youth tournaments. The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup returns to Canada for the first time since 2002. The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014 will feature 16 teams featuring players born 1994 or later.

The National Organising Committee for the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015™ features Victor Montagliani (chair), Steven Reed, Janine Helland, Doug Redmond, Clare Rustad, Walter Sieber and Peter Montopoli.

To help engage fans in Canada and abroad, FIFA and the National Organising Committee will encourage fans to use digital media to share their own meanings of the slogan TO A GREATER GOAL. In following the lead on FIFA’s official handle @fifawwc, fans can also use the hashtag #GreaterGoal in English or #GrandBut in French.
Coupe du Monde Féminine de la FIFA, Canada 2015™
La Coupe du Monde Féminine de la FIFA™™ se déroule chaque quatre ans et la prochaine édition se déroulera au Canada en 2015. Il s’agit du premier événement sportif d’envergure au Canada se déroulant d’un océan à l’autre avec des matchs au programme à Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montréal et Moncton. La Coupe du Monde Féminine de la FIFA, Canada 2015™ réunira les 24 meilleures équipes nationales féminines au monde.
