One week after allegations of a shocking gang rape incident that began on Yonge St., Toronto police have released no further details of the investigation and say it could take “a long time” to break the case.
“It’s still ongoing, we’re still working with the victim to try and zero in on a location, which we can get more information from,” said Const. Wendy Drummond, spokesperson for the Toronto Police.
Many in the high-traffic area of Yonge and Gerrard Sts. have been on alert since police announced they were investigating a sex crime after a woman was picked up at random shortly after 9:30 p.m. last Tuesday.
The woman, 27, was walking south on Yonge St. when a black minivan carrying six men pulled up. She was coerced into the vehicle, though police have not provided details about how she was convinced to get in. She did not know her attackers.
The woman was taken to a home in the Yonge St. and Eglinton Ave. area, where she was sexually assaulted by all six men until, hours later, they fled the home, allowing her to escape. All six suspects remain at large. Criticism arose last week that members of the community — specifically students at nearby Ryerson University — had not been given adequate warning or detail about the attack.
An official warning from Ryerson security was issued Friday — three days after the incident — said Bruce Piercey, of the university’s Public Affairs office.
The warning has been posted on bulletins around campus and emailed to departments. The security message was not posted on Ryerson’s security watch website until Monday afternoon.
Police have confirmed the woman was not a Ryerson student, but in light of the attack so close to campus, members of Ryerson Security met with a Toronto Police community response team Monday to go over safety tips to provide to students.
“After incidents like this, we always sit down and look at procedures and how things can be done better or differently,” Peircey said.
Lise Gotell, a sexual assault expert and professor of women’s studies at the University of Alberta, said police have a responsibility to provide information to the public without compromising the investigation, which can be a difficult balance.
In this case, police have provided detailed descriptions of the suspects, but Gotell said knowing how the woman was coerced into the vehicle is “a crucial bit of information” that may help women better understand the risk.
Toronto police have said they’ve released all the information possible in a sexual assault case, and done everything they can to promote public awareness.
“On the issue of getting into the car, we’re not holding anything back, there is nothing more to release,” said Mark Pugash, the Toronto police director of corporate communications, adding that there is also nothing to suggest a connection to a specific institution, such as Ryerson.
Pugash also said that issuing explicit safety warnings to women can be problematic for police because that can be perceived as victim blaming.
Amanda Dale — who worked on the recommendations for the 1999 Jane Doe audit of sexual-assault policing in Toronto — said police are correct not to give specific safety warnings, such as not going out after dark, because it restricts women’s freedoms.
“What we need (in community warnings) is sensible information, and then long-term strategies to actually prevent the crime.” Suspect descriptions

Gang sex assault: Have police done enough to warn the public?
It could be among the most shocking sex crimes in Toronto’s recent history — a woman, forced at random off the city’s bustling main drag and into a car, where she was driven to a home and allegedly gang-raped by six men.
But police have released little information about the violent crime, and with some in the area unaware of the incident, questions are being raised about whether police have adequately informed the public.
The details released paint a terrifying picture: the woman, 27, was walking south on Yonge St. near Gerrard St. just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when a black minivan carrying six men pulled up. The occupants demanded that she get in the car. Police will not say how the woman was coerced into the vehicle, but said she did not know the identity of her attackers.
She was then taken to a home in the Yonge St. and Eglinton Ave. area, where she was sexually assaulted by all six men until, hours later, they fled the home, allowing her to escape.
All the suspects in the violent crime are still at large.
Most problematic in view of public awareness, security services at nearby Ryerson University — where the campus reopened Thursday and classes resume Monday — have not been issued a warning bulletin to publicize the incident.
“They would normally issue a warning for this,” said Caitlin Smith, Ryerson Student Union president. “When anything like that happens it’s good for the community to know so that we can be aware of what’s happening on our campus — and Yonge and Gerrard is pretty much on our campus.”
Frankie Shen, a 23-year-old Ryerson student who lives at 40 Gerrard St., half a block east of Yonge, was shocked to learn about the incident. In the past, she’s seen posters at school about sexual assaults, but she had yet to hear of Tuesday’s incident.
“I thought it was a safe place, but now I’m worried,” she said.
Fellow Ryerson student Haley Le, 21, also had not heard about the attack, and expressed concern about leaving campus when her day ends.
“I’m glad I know now — I have class until 9:30 at night,” she said.
There is no official policy on warning the public, says Jane Doe, the pseudonym for a longtime advocate for sexual assault victims who was a victim in Toronto’s infamous Balcony Rapist case.
“There is a practice where police issue warnings when and if they think it’s appropriate. When they do issue, it’s fear-based and hysterical,” she said.
But Mark Pugash, head of communications for the Toronto Police, said the force has done everything in its power to alert the community, including issuing two news releases about the incident, sending officers out to canvass the area, and putting out information on social media, including Facebook and Twitter.
“We’ve used every communication channel — we have been all over the media, radio, television, speaking to businesses, getting footage.”
Barclay Jewelry, on the corner of Yonge St. and Gerrard St., said police had not come to the business or asked for video footage from security cameras, something they have done in the past.
Responding to questions about why police have not released more information, Pugash said that since they are dealing with a sexual assault case — as opposed to something like a homicide — it would be inappropriate to offer more details.
In the case of serious crimes, police sometimes set up a command post in the area, but that wasn’t warranted for this investigation because investigators did not believe it would help the case.
Police releases about the incident did not include a special warning to residents to be extra cautious, because that can be perceived as blaming the victim.
“We put out as much information as we can, to allow people to make decisions on how they are going to behave. I would guess that the vast majority of people, given that information, will judge themselves accordingly… Our message is be alert to your surroundings all the time.”

No deben haber sido demasiados los que lo vieron jugar en las divisiones menore de Newell's, en Rosario. Tampoco deben haber sido demasiados los que lo siguieron durante su desarrollo en La Masía, en Barcelona. Y sólo una minoría ponía sus ojos en él cuando dio los primeros pasos con los catalanes en el profesionalismo, "opacado" por las maravillas que Ronaldinho ofrecía en la época.
Pero desde que debutó en Barcelona, con Frank Rijkaard en la banca, empezó a generar comentarios. Todo querían saber un poco más del chico argentino que, siendo tan joven, ya tenía un lugar en uno de los mejores equipos del mundo. Lo que en ese entonces no sabían era que, algunos años después, de la mano de Messi se transformaría en el mejor equipo de los últimos años y en uno de los mejores de la historia.

En lo personal, en 2007 y 2008 quedó segundo en la elección del Mejor Jugador de la FIFA. Pero de ahí en más no ha parado. Su velocidad, sus goles y su forma de jugar lo han hecho imponerse sobre otros grandes jugadores, aun cuando éstos ganen un Mundial.

Y aunque si tiene o no responsabilidad es otro debate, lo cierto es que hay muy pocas cosas que se le puedan cuestionar a la "Pulga", a la hora de decidir si entra al grupo de los mejores jugadores de la historia. Títulos tiene, distinciones también, sólo falta esa que quieren todos y que, lamentablemente para él, no depende sólo de sí mismo.
Por ahora, celebra como el mejor jugador del mundo, por tercer año consecutivo. Algo que pocos pueden anotar en su lista.

Canadian Milos Raonic jumped six spots to No. 25 in the ATP world rankings after his victory at the Chennai Open over the weekend.
The hard-serving 21-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., defeated top-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) in the final of the Chennai Open on Sunday for his second career ATP World Tour victory.
Serbia's Novak Djokovic remained in top spot, well ahead of Spain's Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer of Switzerland.
The top three also remained the same on the women's rankings list. Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark was No. 1, followed by Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.
Rebecca Marino of Vancouver rose one spot to No. 63.
In men's doubles, Toronto's Daniel Nestor and Belarusian partner Max Mirnyi were tied for third behind American twins Bob and Mike Bryan. Nestor and Mirnyi were victorious at the Brisbane International over the weekend.
Raonic, who peaked at No. 25 in the rankings during his breakthrough season last year, won all 48 of his service games last week. He became the first player to win a tournament without dropping serve since Federer did it at the 2008 grass-court event in Halle.
Raonic is 2-1 in ATP World Tour finals, claiming his first title in San Jose last February. He followed that up a week later by reaching the final in Memphis before losing to American Andy Roddick.
Raonic started last season at No. 156 in the rankings and went on to win the ATP Newcomer of the Year award.
He will next play in an exhibition event in Kooyong, Australia, as a tuneup ahead of this month's Australian Open in Melbourne. Raonic will be the No. 23 seed in the men's singles draw.

Dubois, Fichman, Marino and Wozniak to represent Canada at Americas Zone Group I event in Brazil
Montreal, January 3, 2012 – Tennis Canada announced Tuesday the names of the players slated to compete in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group I matches to be held in Curitiba, Brazil from January 30 to February 4, 2012.
Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC), Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON), Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) were chosen to represent the nation by team captain Sylvain Bruneau.
“We came very close to reaching World Group I last year and now it’s time to get back to our winning ways after two tough losses in 2012,” said Bruneau. “I have confidence in the depth and experience of my team. We are aiming for a spot in the World Group for 2013 and we will get there by taking one step at a time. ”
Member of the Miele Canadian Fed Cup team since 2004, Dubois has racked up 21 wins and eight losses. Currently ranked no. 97 on the WTA rankings, Dubois enjoyed the best season of her career in 2011, finishing the year inside the Top 100 for the first time. However, a stress fracture in her foot forced Dubois to shut down her season in September.
Fichman, 21 years old, has earned fourteen victories compared to just three losses since making her Fed Cup debut in 2005. She also boasts an 11-1 record in matches played on clay. She currently sits at no. 168 in singles and no. 99 in doubles on the world rankings.
Marino made her Fed Cup debut last year, posting a record of two wins and three losses. At no. 64 on the WTA rankings, the 21 year-old is the top ranked player on the squad. Marino put together a breakthrough 2011 campaign, reaching a carrer best ranking of no. 38 in July.
Wozniak boasts an impressive Fed Cup record of 35 wins and eight losses. Her 28 triumphs in singles and 35 total victories are both Canadian Fed Cup records. She is also the most experienced player on the team having played 13 ties for Canada in her career. Currently ranked no. 107 in the world, Wozniak won the $100,000 Odlum Brown Van Open in Vancouver last summer.
In 2011, Canada lost 3-2 to Serbia in the first round of World Group II and the team was relegated to Americas Zone Group I for 2012 following another 3-2 loss at the hands of Slovenia in a World Group II playoff tie last April.
Canada joins Argentina, the Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela on the clay courts in Curitiba, Brazil for the Americas Group I zonal event.
The participating nations will be divided into two groups of four teams. The winners of each group will then face off for the chance to take part in a World Group II playoff tie in April 2012 while the two lowest ranking teams will be sent to Group II of the Americas Zone in 2013.

Montréal, 3 janvier 2012 - C’est mardi que Tennis Canada annonçait la composition de l’équipe qui participera aux rencontres du Groupe I de la zone des Amériques de la Fed Cup par BNP Paribas, qui seront présentées à Curitiba, au Brésil du 30 janvier au 4 février 2012.
Ainsi, Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC), Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON), Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) et Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) ont été choisies par le capitaine Sylvain Bruneau pour représenter le Canada.
« Il s’en est fallu de peu l’an dernier pour que nous atteignions le Groupe mondial I. Nous voulons maintenant renouer avec la victoire, » commentait Bruneau. « J’ai confiance en la profondeur et l’expérience de mon équipe. Nous visons une qualification pour le Groupe mondial I en 2013 mais nous devrons d’abord franchir les étapes une à la fois. »
Membre de l’équipe canadienne Miele de la Fed Cup depuis 2004, Dubois présente une fiche de 21 victoires et huit défaites. Le Canada se joint donc à l’Argentine, au Bahamas, à la Bolivie, au Brésil, à la Colombie, au Paraguay, au Pérou et au Venezuela pour jouer sur terre battue à Curitiba, au Brésil, cette épreuve du Groupe I de la zone des Amériques.
Les nations participantes seront divisées en deux groupes de quatre équipes chaque. Les pays gagnants de chaque groupe s’affronteront pour mériter la chance de prendre part aux qualifications pour le Groupe mondial II prévues pour avril, tandis que les deux pays au bas du classement seront relégués au Groupe II de la zone des Amériques pour 2013.

El presidente francés, Nicolas Sarkozy, se reunirá con la canciller alemana, Angela Merkel, en Berlín el 9 de enero para preparar una cumbre de líderes europeos que se celebrará a fin de mes, dijo el lunes la presidencia francesa.
Los dos líderes definirían los detalles de un acuerdo alcanzado en diciembre para aumentar la integración fiscal a lo largo de la zona euro.
Se trata de la primera cita entre ambos mandatarios en el 2012, año electoral en Francia, después de un 2011 en el que ambos mandatarios se erigieron en cabezas visibles de la Unión Europea para solventar la crisis económica y financiera.
Cuatro días después, Sarkozy viajará a España para entrevistarse con el nuevo jefe del Gobierno español, Mariano
Rajoy, en el que será el primer encuentro de éste con un jefe de Estado extranjero desde que tomó posesión de su cargo.
