Canada to host CONCACAF Gold Cup games for the first time

16 December 2014
The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced today the 13 North American cities – Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Toronto – that will welcome the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, next 7-26 July.
The region’s marquee national team tournament will again call on world-class venues for next year’s edition, including a mix of NFL stadiums across the country, along with soccer-specific stadiums home to Major League Soccer teams, namely BMO Field in Toronto, ON.
“We would like to thank all cities and venues across the United States – and in fact North America as a whole --for their continued interest in our Confederation’s marquee event, the Gold Cup. We congratulate those which have been selected to host the 2015 edition,” said CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb. “The explosive growth of the game across CONCACAF has been on display recently on the world’s stage, and we now look forward to bringing this success home to our regional fans during our premier tournament.”
Toronto’s BMO Field is one of two 2014 venues that will host Gold Cup games for the first time. The matches in Canada will mark the first time the Confederation’s flagship national team event has visited Canadian soil.
Canada’s first soccer-specific stadium, BMO Field is located at Exhibition Place in Toronto and plays home to Canada’s National Soccer Team, as well as Toronto FC, Canada’s first Major League Soccer team. In its inaugural summer, BMO Field hosted over 260,000 fans during 12 games as the main venue for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Since 2007, BMO Field has welcomed over three million fans and has hosted a multitude of events, including the 2010 MLS Cup. This past summer, BMO Field hosted a number of matches as part of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014.
“Today marks another great step in Canada’s development to become a leading soccer nation and we would like to thank CONCACAF for the opportunity to have such a marquee event played on Canadian soil,” said Victor Montagliani, Canada Soccer President and CONCACAF ExCo Member. “Canadian soccer fans have always taken great pride in showing their support for Canada during this key tournament, traveling across the region to represent our country, and it is with great honour that we worked with CONCACAF to bring the beautiful game closer to them for the 2015 edition. We now hope that they will be rewarded with seeing Canada play its final group match in Toronto this summer!”

The United States will kick off the 2015 Gold Cup in Dallas’ Toyota Stadium on 7 July, before moving on along with the rest of Group A to Boston (Gillette Stadium, 10 July) and Kansas City (Sporting Park, 13 July).
Costa Rica, the seeded team in Group B, begins play in Carson, CA (StubHub Center, 8 July), then moves on to Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium (11 July) and Toronto’s BMO Field (14 July).

The Georgia Dome (Atlanta, GA), Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia, PA), M&T Bank Stadium (Baltimore, MD) and MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, NJ) will all host knockout round dates. Complete groups and schedule, including selection of dates and matches for the knockout round and the awarding of the Final, will be announced in early 2015.

Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and the United States, in alphabetical order, will compete for the Confederation Crown in July.
The final spot will be decided in March of next year through a play-in series between the fifth-place finisher of the 2014 UNCAF Copa Centroamericana (Honduras) and the 2014 Caribbean Football Union Caribbean Cup (French Guyana). French Guyana will be home team for the first leg on 25 March, while Honduras will host the return leg on 29 March.
Taking place every two years, the Gold Cup is the official national team championship of the region, routinely drawing capacity crowds and millions of television viewers across the region. Featuring the highest-level players from across the confederation, the tournament includes the three previous Gold Cup champions – Canada (1 Gold Cup), Mexico (6), and the USA (5) – as well as the top finishers from the most recent Central American and Caribbean championship tournaments.

Live Your Goals Canada getting noticed
This summer the Ontario Soccer Association's Female Mentorship Program, in association with the OSA Grassroots department, put on a FIFA Live Your Goals event in the lead up to the U-20 Women's World Cup.

The Toronto event was greeted with warm reception by the Ontario soccer community and has set the bar high for future Live Your Goals events to be held next year.

So high in fact, that the Canadian version of the FIFA Live Your Goals events garnered attention from press abroad recently and was featured in the UK Magazine 'Overseas.'

TENNIS CANADA NAMES BOUCHARD 2014 BIRKS FEMALE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Wimbledon finalist also wins Most Improved Female Player;
Dabrowski receives Female Doubles Player of the Year honours

Toronto, December 4, 2014 – Tennis Canada announced Thursday the female recipients of the 2014 Tennis Canada Excellence Awards, with Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, Que.) named Birks Female Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. The 20-year-old, who climbed from world No. 32 to a high of No. 5 in 2014 – becoming Canada’s highest-ranked singles player in history – also has received Most Improved Female Player of the Year honours for the third straight time. In addition to Bouchard, Gabriela Dabrowski (Ottawa) has been recognized for her stellar season on the doubles circuit with her second consecutive Female Doubles Player of the Year award.

“We are all just so proud of everything Eugenie has accomplished this year. She has really set the standard for tennis in this country and is inspiring so many people around Canada to follow the sport and pick up a racquet themselves,” said Kelly Murumets, president and CEO, Tennis Canada. “What’s even more impressive is her career is still in its infancy. She is such an impressive, focused, and poised young woman and I cannot wait to see what is in store for her next. A huge congratulations goes out to Eugenie on a fabulous 2014!”

Bouchard’s incredible rise from up-and-coming star to bonafide Top 10 player began early in 2014, when she became the first Canadian since 1984 to make a Grand Slam singles semifinal at the Australian Open. In the months that followed, Bouchard posted several impressive results, most notably ousting Venus Williams and No. 8 Jelena Jankovic en route to the semifinals at the Premier-level Charleston tournament. In the spring, she also led Canada to a historic Fed Cup result, going 4-0 through two ties against Serbia and Slovakia to help her country earn a spot in the eight-team Fed Cup World Group for the first time.

Leading into the second Slam of the year, Bouchard hit another milestone by winning her maiden WTA title at Nuremburg. She turned her triumph in Germany into a 10-match win streak by backing up her performance Down Under with another semifinal finish at the French Open. A couple weeks later, she made even more history by becoming the first Canadian to reach a Slam singles final at Wimbledon. The latter part of 2014 saw her reach the round of 16 at the US Open, finish as runner-up at Wuhan, and qualify for the year-end WTA Finals. Reaching a high of world No. 5, Bouchard finished the year ranked No. 7, making her not only one of the best players Canada has ever produced, but firmly one of the best women on the pro circuit today.

“We are very honoured to celebrate such a great Canadian female athlete. Eugenie Bouchard’s dedication to excellence, which parallels Birks’ values, is what makes her a success, and why she deserves to be a Tennis Canada Excellence Award winner,’’ said Jean-Christophe Bédos, President and CEO of Birks Group Inc.

Canada’s highest-ranked doubles player on the WTA circuit at world No. 59, Dabrowski is the recipient of Female Doubles Player of the Year for the second time. The 22-year-old, who first broke into the Top 100 last season, went one step further in 2014 by winning her first WTA title at Washington with partner Shuko Aoyama and hitting a high of No. 50. She also clinched her first career Grand Slam match at Roland Garros and made the third round at the US Open with Alicja Rosolska. In addition, she was a semifinalist at Monterrey and Linz. She continued to succeed on the ITF Pro Circuit as well, taking home two titles to bring her career total to 11. It was a banner year for Dabrowski in singles also, as she won her first professional singles crown at the $50K Tevlin Challenger in Toronto and posted a new career-high ranking of world No. 164.

The Tennis Canada Excellence Awards are selected by a committee comprised of high-ranking Tennis Canada personnel and the country’s top national coaches. The recipients of the male high-performance awards will be announced on Friday, December 5.

TENNIS CANADA CHOISIT BOUCHARD EN TANT QUE JOUEUSE DE L’ANNÉE BIRKS 2014
La finaliste de Wimbledon est également la Joueuse la plus améliorée;
