SOCHI, February 16, 2014 - Tomorrow evening Darya Domracheva could become a legend. The Sochi 2014 Olympic games are in their full swing and the biathlon competitions are one of the most followed and when the competitors take the field for the Women's 12,5km Mass Start the foucs will be on whether Domracheva can achieve her third Olympic medal.
The Belarussian princess of biathlon Darya Domracheva has entered the world of Olympic legends as the first woman gold medalist in the entire Belarussian Winter Olympic Games history. After her achievement in the 10km pursuit, the 27-year-old athlete outdid herself with another gold in the 15km individuals, thus becoming a true legend.
Darya was born August 3, 1986 in Belarus moved with her family to Russia soon after: this is the reason she has a large fan base not just in her national country but also in the host country of these Winter Games.
"She is a very entertaining athlete, she has now become an idol due to her gold medals but her career has not been one without trivial mistakes, in shooting positions for example,” are the words of the press about Darya. Her own reaction after such comic situations are always "Oops, I'm sorry…", followed by a shrug and her ever-present delicate smile.
After the first gold medal obtained in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, for both her and her country, the Belarussian athlete has become a public figure and have been adored by fans, which has at times even gone too far: flowers and pictures but also people that wanted to touch even a little part of her. "She has been almost frightened by this enthusiasm,” the Belarussian national team confirms . “She does not feel comfortable in this situation, she is really a humble girl with human values, focused on the sport.”
"Her coach comes from Germany, he is a very mild-mannered and has helped a lot our girls, including Darya, with their shooting technique,” the Belarussian team confirms. “Unfortunately he is currently seriously ill, which is why we have decided to bring two coaches along. We don't know what the exact implications of the illness are and whether he will to need special treatment during the Games. Our support and these medals are for him.”
