21-year-old Canadian defeats Berlocq in straight sets to reach the third round
Montreal, March 11, 2012 – Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) advanced to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday night, an ATP Masters 1000 event currently underway in Indian Wells, California.
After receiving an opening round bye as the tournament’s no. 27 seed, Raonic defeated Carlos Berlocq of Argentina, ranked no. 38 in the world, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Raonic hit 19 aces in the match and broke serve four times. He hit consecutive aces to close it out in just over an hour. The 21-year-old is now 16-2 on the season.
With the win, Raonic sets up a much-anticipated third round encounter on Tuesday with World no.3 and 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer. The Swiss took out American Denis Kudla in his opening match. This will mark the first meeting between the two players. Raonic has two wins over Top 10 players in 2012, both of which came in Chennai over Nicolas Almagro and Janko Tipsarevic en route to his second career title.
Meanwhile, Daniel Nestor (Toronto, ON) and his partner Max Mirnyi of Belarus won their first match in Indian Wells on Sunday, defeating Nicolas Almagro and Mark Knowles 6-3, 7-6(3).

Après avoir bénéficié d’une exemption au premier tour en vertu de son statut de 27e tête de série, Raonic a facilement pris la mesure de l’Argentin Carlos Berlocq, 38e mondial, en deux manches de 6-4 et 6-2. Raonic a produit 19 aces et a ravi le service de son adversaire à quatre reprises. Il a d’ailleurs réalisé deux aces consécutifs pour conclure le match en un peu plus d’une heure. Le Canadien de 21 ans possède maintenant une fiche de 16 victoires et 2 défaites depuis le début de la saison.
Grâce à ce gain, Raonic met la table pour un affrontement très attendu avec le numéro trois mondial et détenteur de 16 couronnes du Grand Chelem, Roger Federer. En soirée, le Suisse a disposé de l’Américain Denis Kudla en deux manches. Ce sera la première rencontre entre les deux joueurs. En 2012, Raonic compte deux victoires aux dépens de joueurs du Top 10, les deux ayant été signées à Chennai contre Nicolas Almagro et Janko Tipsarevic alors qu’il se dirigeait vers le deuxième titre de sa carrière.
