FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 match schedule unveiled

The official match schedule for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 was unveiled today at the City Hall of Montréal just less than one year before the start of the competition.
The opening match with hosts Canada will take place on 5 August 2014 at the National Soccer Stadium in Toronto. The two last matches, both the match for third place and the final, will take place in the famous Stade Olympique of Montréal on 24 August. The three-week competition will feature 16 teams and 32 matches from the opener through to the final.
All four Official Host Cities – Edmonton, Toronto, Montréal and Moncton – will host six matches in the group phase. Canada, as hosts seeded A1, will play at least two group matches in Toronto and one group match in Montréal.
“Canada is honoured to welcome the best young female soccer players from around the world next summer,” said Canadian Minister of State (Sport) Bal Gosal. “Our government is pleased to support this major international event that will showcase our cultural diversity and bring many economic benefits. We invite Canadians to join in as the excitement for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 starts to build across our nation in the coming months.”
“The announcement of the match schedule is an important moment on the road to the final tournament as the Host Cities now know the number of games they will host. And the fans can already save the dates and in November will be able to finally buy their tickets for the matches”, commented Tatjana Haenni, FIFA’s Deputy Director of Competitions for Women’s Football.
“Our four Official Host Cities will do a wonderful job hosting the best young footballers in this important youth competition,” said Victor Montagliani, Chairman of the National Organizing Committee for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014. “These 32 matches provide an important step on the development ladder to the national “A” teams and future FIFA Women’s World Cups.”

British Columbia champions again

British Columbia has won another Canada Games Women's Soccer Tournament, again breaking the hearts of the Québec selects side.

Samantha Dion scored a pair of goals in the 3:2 victory, giving British Columbia its fifth championship in six editions of the women's tournament. It marked the second time in a row that B.C. defeated Québec in the final.

In the Thursday 8 August final, Dion (on a penalty) and Seina Kashima gave British Columbia a 2-0 lead before Amanda Pierre-Louis and Valérie Sanderson equalised for the hosts.

Just three minutes after the equaliser, though, Dion scored her second of the game to give the two-time defending champions a precious one-goal advantage.

British Columbia would never relinquish that lead.

Of note, all 18 players on the British Columbia side are current members of the Vancouver Whitecaps Elite Girls Program. Coach Jesse Symons is the first coach to win back-to-back tournaments.
Canadian U-20 coach Andrew Olivieri was in attendance for the last two days of the competition, having arrived from Montréal after helping unveil the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014 schedule on Tuesday.

International referees at the Canada Games Women’s Soccer Tournament
Four Canadian international officials were appointed to the Canada Games Women’s Soccer Tournament in Sherbrooke, with trio Sheena Dickson, Suzanne Morisset and Marie-Josée Charbonneau working the championship final. Carol Anne Chénard, who previously worked at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011, was appointed the referee for the Canada Games bronze medal final.
