CANADIAN FILIP PELIWO NAMED ITF JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPION

Gloria Liang wins the U16 Orange Bowl title Montréal, December 11, 2012 – Today, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced the ITF World Champions. Joining the ranks of World Champions Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams, Filip Peliwo (Vancouver, BC) was named Junior World Champion. Peliwo is only the second Canadian to earn a World Champion title. Former World Doubles Champion Daniel Nestor was the first. “This is such a great achievement and a huge honour to be recognized by the ITF for this award,” said Peliwo. “I exceeded even my own expectations this past year and to have the year-end No. 1 ranking is something really special that I am proud of.” In his last year on the junior circuit, Peliwo had one of the most prolific seasons in junior tennis history. In addition to reaching four junior Grand Slam finals and becoming the first player to achieve such a feat in 28 years, Peliwo won the Wimbledon and US Open singles titles. On July 9, he became the no.1 ITF junior player for the very first time and the only Canadian to make it to the top. He ends 2012 as the highest-ranking junior boys player. He is also the only Canadian to hold two junior Grand Slam singles titles. Liang wins the Orange Bowl On Saturday, eighth seed Gloria Liang (Mississauga, ON) won the prestigious Orange Bowl U16 title. She follows in the footsteps of compatriot Erin Routliffe (Caledon, ON), who earned the crown last year. In the final, Liang, who is based at the National Training Centre, defeated Chloe Michele Ouellet-Pizer of the United States in two sets (6-3, 7-5). “It feels really good because I didn’t think I could get this far," Liang said. "I’ve never played so well in such a big tournament. I was really nervous, actually, in the beginning. Ainsi, Filip Peliwo (Vancouver, BC), qui a été nommé « Champion junior du monde », retrouve son nom aux côtés de ceux de Novak Djokovic et de Serena Williams. Peliwo est seulement le deuxième joueur canadien à recevoir cet honneur, toutes catégories confondues. Auparavant, seul Daniel Nestor avait été nommé « Champion du monde ITF de double ». « C’est une belle réalisation et un immense honneur de recevoir cette mention de l’ITF », affirmait l’athlète de 18 ans. « J’ai dépassé mes propres attentes au cours de la dernière année. Je suis très fier de terminer la saison au premier rang mondial. » À sa dernière année chez les juniors, Peliwo a signé l’une des saisons les plus prolifiques de l’histoire du tennis junior. En plus d’avoir atteint les quatre finales des épreuves juniors du Grand Chelem – devenant le premier joueur à réussir cet exploit en 28 ans –, Peliwo a conquis les trophées du simple de Wimbledon et des Internationaux des États-Unis. Le 9 juillet, il s’est hissé pour la première fois au sommet du classement junior de l’ITF, devenant le premier Canadien à occuper le premier rang mondial et il terminera l’année 2012 au premier échelon. Il est également le seul Canadien à détenir deux couronnes juniors de simple du Grand Chelem. En grande finale, Liang, qui s’entraîne au Centre national, a pris la mesure de l’Américaine Chloe Michele Ouellet-Pizer 6-3 et 7-5. « Je suis très heureuse, car je ne croyais pas pouvoir me rendre aussi loin », avouait Liang après la rencontre. « Je n’ai jamais joué aussi bien dans un tournoi aussi important.
