Day three in round-of-16 action will see the five-time world champion Brazil playing against Mexico with Belgium facing Japan to earn a place in the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Brazil and Mexico's first World Cup meeting was in the opening match of the 1950 edition of the tournament, when hosts Brazil defeated Mexico 4-0. Ademir (31', 79'), Jair (65') and Baltazar (71') netted for the host side in front of over 80,000 spectators at the newly constructed Maracana Stadium. Brazil have advanced past the group stage at the World Cup for the 13th time in a row, which is the longest active streak.
Belgium have good memories of playing teams from Asia in the World Cup. In six matches, the Red Devils have won three times, drawn twice and lost once. Japan's last appearance at this stage of a World Cup finals is sure to be a source of motivation for Monday's game. At South Africa 2010, the Samurai Blue suffered heartbreak when it fell to Paraguay in a penalty shoot-out.
