LONDON 2012: Canada’s Jessica Zelinka improved to eighth overall in the women’s heptathlon to put herself into medal contention at the London Olympics.







LONDON—Canada’s Jessica Zelinka improved to eighth overall in the women’s heptathlon to put herself into medal contention at the London Olympics.
Zelinka started competition Saturday with an 5.91-metre, 11th-place result in long jump.
But the London, Ont., native recovered with a third-place effort in her javelin group after a personal-best throw of 45.75.
Zelinka now heads into the final 800-metre event with 5,503 points — 198 shy of third-place Lyudmyla Yosypenko of Ukraine.
Britain’s Jessica Ennis has the overall lead with 5,971 points.
Brianne Theisen of Humboldt, Sask., had personal bests in both long jump, at 6.01 metres, and javelin, at 46.47, to move to 14th overall at 5,408 points.
