Matthews/Ovechkin
Since Auston Matthews arrived in the NHL in 2016, only one player has outscored him. That’d be Alex Ovechkin, who has 86 goals over the span to Matthews’ 83. Still, considering Matthews has begun this season with a league-leading nine goals in five games — a tally that makes Ovechkin’s four goals in four games look quaint — this is an arms race worth watching. Matthews, for the record, has scored more goals per game (0.56) than anyone in the league during his career.
NEED TO KNOW
Matthews has scored nine times on 17 shots this season, a ridiculously hot 52.9-per-cent percentage … Toronto’s power play leads the league with seven goals on 14 attempts for a 50-per-cent conversion rate … Long way to go, but the all-time greatest NHL power play, as measured by conversion rate, belonged to the Montreal Canadiens in 1977-78. That team, whose big man-advantage guns were Steve Shutt and Guy Lafleur, scored on 31.9 per cent of its opportunities … The Ovechkin-led Capitals boasted the best power play of the past 20 seasons. Washington’s 2012-13 unit scored on 26.9 per cent of its chances.
