Ticket sales reach one million
Chief Executive Officer to address accredited media at 10:30 a.m. Danforth Room, Main Press Centre
TORONTO, July 19, 2015 –The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games are winning the support of people in the region, and making a very positive impression on an international audience.Somewhere in the region, someone has bought the one-millionth ticket to the Games —sales increased by more than 300,000 since the Pan Am Opening Ceremony on July 10, as people throughout the Pan Am region embraced the Games.
The Opening Ceremony and sports coverage are big hits across the country. As of July 16, about 16 million Canadians, 46 per cent of the population, have tuned in to watch Pan Am Games coverage on either CBC TV/ICI Radio-Canada or its partners since July 10.
“The numbers speak for themselves,” said Saäd Rafi, chief executive officer, TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015). “With one million tickets sold and millions of Canadians tuning into the Games, there’s no doubt that Toronto and the region have embraced these once-in-a-lifetime Games.”
PANAMANIA presented by CIBC — the 35-day arts and culture festival TORONTO 2015 — continues to receive rave reviews and strong attendance. More than 170 PANAMANIA performances have already taken place across the city featuring music, theatre, dance and more. An estimated 120,000 fans have visited PANAMANIA Live @ Nathan Phillips Square, which continues through July 26 and then reopens from August 7 to 12 for the Parapan Am Games.
Fans are excited about their Pan Am Games experience and social media followers are eager to share this once-in-a-lifetime experience with family and friends. Since the Opening Ceremony, “TO2015” has had 534,000 mentions on social media and, at times, trended worldwide, with a total of 1.82 billion impressions. The Games website, TORONTO2015.org, has received 7.2 million web sessions. The TORONTO 2015 spectator app, presented by CIBC, which provides spectators with venue details, Games maps, torch relay maps, ticketing information, spectator services, official celebrations and more, is proving to be a fan favourite, surpassing 135,000 downloads.
The Games are a never-before-seen event in our communities — already more than 1,100 medals have been awarded in more than 200 Medal Ceremonies and more than 50 Pan Am records have been broken. Walk down to Nathan Phillips Square, CIBC Pan
Am Park or the Distillery District to feel the atmosphere. The vibrant CIBC Athletes' Village has welcomed about 6,100 Pan Am athletes and has already served over 350,000 meals, out of the estimated 464,000 that will be served for the duration of the Games, to athletes to ensure they perform at their very best.
There are still tickets available to enjoy the largest international multi-sport Games in Canada’s history, but there is only one week left to make the most of this event and create Pan Am memories. Visit TORONTO2015.org for more information.
Buying tickets to the Games
Tickets are available at TORONTO2015.org/tickets. The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games ticket program is designed to be affordable and accessible for everyone by offering:
Integrated tickets: Every event ticket will allow the holder to access transit on the day of the event.
Affordable pricing: Tickets start at just $20, with 75 per cent of tickets priced $45 and under.
Half-price tickets for persons under 16 years of age, or 65 and over: Tickets will be offered at a 50 per cent discount — some will start at $10. The number of discounted tickets is limited, so buy early.
Tickets for Parapan Am sporting events will range from $20 to $35 for adults, with a youth (under 16) and senior (65+) discount from $10 to $12.50 available, depending on the event. The number of discounted tickets is limited, so don't delay.

TORONTO 2015 On Track to be Truly Historic Games
Ticket sales reach one million

TORONTO, July 19, 2015 –The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games are winning the support of people in the region, and making a very positive impression on an international audience.Somewhere in the region, someone has bought the one-millionth ticket to the Games —sales increased by more than 300,000 since the Pan Am Opening Ceremony on July 10, as people throughout the Pan Am region embraced the Games.
The Opening Ceremony and sports coverage are big hits across the country. As of July 16, about 16 million Canadians, 46 per cent of the population, have tuned in to watch Pan Am Games coverage on either CBC TV/ICI Radio-Canada or its partners since July 10.
“The numbers speak for themselves,” said Saäd Rafi, chief executive officer, TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015). “With one million tickets sold and millions of Canadians tuning into the Games, there’s no doubt that Toronto and the region have embraced these once-in-a-lifetime Games.”
PANAMANIA presented by CIBC — the 35-day arts and culture festival TORONTO 2015 — continues to receive rave reviews and strong attendance. More than 170 PANAMANIA performances have already taken place across the city featuring music, theatre, dance and more. An estimated 120,000 fans have visited PANAMANIA Live @ Nathan Phillips Square, which continues through July 26 and then reopens from August 7 to 12 for the Parapan Am Games.
Fans are excited about their Pan Am Games experience and social media followers are eager to share this once-in-a-lifetime experience with family and friends. Since the Opening Ceremony, “TO2015” has had 534,000 mentions on social media and, at times, trended worldwide, with a total of 1.82 billion impressions. The Games website, TORONTO2015.org, has received 7.2 million web sessions. The TORONTO 2015 spectator app, presented by CIBC, which provides spectators with venue details, Games maps, torch relay maps, ticketing information, spectator services, official celebrations and more, is proving to be a fan favourite, surpassing 135,000 downloads.
The Games are a never-before-seen event in our communities — already more than 1,100 medals have been awarded in more than 200 Medal Ceremonies and more than 50 Pan Am records have been broken. Walk down to Nathan Phillips Square, CIBC Pan
Am Park or the Distillery District to feel the atmosphere. The vibrant CIBC Athletes' Village has welcomed about 6,100 Pan Am athletes and has already served over 350,000 meals, out of the estimated 464,000 that will be served for the duration of the Games, to athletes to ensure they perform at their very best.

Buying tickets to the Games
Tickets are available at TORONTO2015.org/tickets. The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games ticket program is designed to be affordable and accessible for everyone by offering:
Integrated tickets: Every event ticket will allow the holder to access transit on the day of the event.
Affordable pricing: Tickets start at just $20, with 75 per cent of tickets priced $45 and under.
Half-price tickets for persons under 16 years of age, or 65 and over: Tickets will be offered at a 50 per cent discount — some will start at $10. The number of discounted tickets is limited, so buy early.
Tickets for Parapan Am sporting events will range from $20 to $35 for adults, with a youth (under 16) and senior (65+) discount from $10 to $12.50 available, depending on the event. The number of discounted tickets is limited, so don't delay.

Colombia sweeps gold medals at inaugural Pan American golf tournament
MARKHAM, Ont. — Colombia swept all three gold medals at the Pan Am Games' inaugural golf tournament on Sunday.
Marcelo Rozo shot 13-under to win the men's competition while teammate Mariajo Uribe went 9-under to capture the women's gold.
Colombia blew away the field for the mixed team gold.
Chilean Felipe Aguilar and Argentine Tommy Cocha went to a playoff for silver and bronze in the men's event.
American Andrea Lee won women's silver and Paraguay's Julieta Granada bronze.
Canada's Austin Connelly, a Dallas native with Nova Scotian roots, played in the final men's group and finished fifth at 8-under.
Angus Glen Golf Club featured the debut for Pan Am golf.
The sport returns to the Olympics for the first time in more than 100 years next summer in Rio de Janeiro.

A hoarse Harnett thrilled with Canada's performance in Week 1 of Pan Ams
TORONTO — Curt Harnett's voice was raspy, so he was trying to take it easy over the weekend. He hiked up and down the stairs at Varsity Stadium, tossing pins into the crowd at the Pan American Games archery competition, in between waving a huge Canadian flag.
But Canada's chef de mission — and the team's head cheerleader — was otherwise keeping quiet.
"Still able to talk (barely), which is a good thing," Harnett said. "I hit it hard. Of course water polo started on the Wednesday before the opening ceremonies, and I kind of maybe overdid it a little bit.
"I've had a couple of days where I've tried to stay quiet, and the crowd's doing their job. But I can't contain myself, I'm emotionally invested in all of this, the success of our athletes is important to me as a person, it's a sense of pride that I can't seem to shake."
A little over a week into the Pan American Games, there has been plenty of reason to be proud and vocal.
Canada topped the medal table through most of Week 1 before falling to second Saturday night. The United States led with 50 gold and 135 total medals. Canada had 48 gold and 122 medals through Saturday. Brazil was a distant third in both, with 28 gold and 86 medals overall.
But Canada quickly boosted its gold medal total to 49 on Sunday morning after Evan Dunfee won the men's 20-kilometre race walk. His teammate Inaki Gomez captured the silver.
The Canadians, who came in with a goal of a top-2 finish, have never won the Pan Am Games. Canada's best finish was second in Winnipeg in 1967. But as the host country, Canada compiled its largest — and arguably strongest — team ever, of 719 athletes, and the results are showing.
"The performance of the team is on par with what our targets were. . . and of course knowing that, with the number of athletes that we were bringing, specifically A team athletes, that performance on the field of play would be top shelf and put them on the podium," said Harnett, a three-time Olympic medallist in track cycling.
"I think the more exciting thing is the athletes who have risen to the occasion, have taken advantage of the home court, homefield advantage and the home crowd, and raised their game, and captured gold medals," he added. "So it's a great combination."
Canada's women's K-4 kayak team of Michelle Russell, Emilie Fournel, KC Fraser and Hannah Vaughan got the parade to the podium going, winning gold on the morning of Day 1.
Numerous memorable performances followed, including:
— Double gold by the men's and women's rugby sevens teams. Women's rugby made its Pan Am debut, and Canada made history in commanding fashion, crushing its opposition 285-19 through six games, and demolishing the U.S. 55-7 in the final. The men clawed their way to a 22-19 win over Argentina;
— Five medals (three gold, a silver and bronze) for Ellie Black, a 19-year-old gymnast from Halifax;
— A one-two finish in women's mountain biking. Canada's Emily Batty and Catharine Pendrel pulled away from the pack in what essentially was a two-woman race. Batty, from Brooklin, Ont., won the gold, while Pendrel, from Harvey Station, N.B., claimed silver;
— A Rio Olympic spot secured. Jacqueline Simoneau of Saint-Laurent, Que., and Karine Thomas of Gatineau, Que., dominated the synchronized swimming duet, to win gold and clinch an Olympic berth. The two added another gold when Canada captured the team event.
— A Canadian swim team that raked in 27 medals including eight gold. Victoria's Ryan Cochrane and Winnipeg's Chantal Van Landeghem were double gold medallists and 17-year-old Emily Overholt of West Vancouver, B.C., collected one medal of every colour.
— A track cycling team that stole the show at the gleaming new velodrome at Milton. Canadians had five gold medals heading into Sunday's final day of competition. Hugo Barrette of Cap-aux-Meules, Que., and Calgary's Monique Sullivan have two gold medals each.
Heading into Week 2, Canada can expect many more medals, especially in track and field — based both on the sheer number of medals available and the strength of the squad.
Andre De Grasse, a 20-year-old who won both the 100 and 200 metres at the NCAA championships in stunning fashion, headlines a Canadian team that has numerous top-ranked athletes.
For Harnett, the victories won't have simply been about the uninterrupted march to the medal podium, but also the intangibles — the energy and enthusiasm of a Canadian team competing at home, some for the first time.
"The energy in the (athletes) village and the energy is really really significant," Harnett said. "Just the other day, Ellie Black is walking out of the village and some of the track athletes are coming in and there's a high-five exchange going on. There's this collective energy.
"Ellie is high off the five medals she won in gymnastics and these athletes had been watching that on television, and following it through social media and they're coming in with this energy that keeps us all going. And that's really what's exciting about what's happening here and the overall attitude and spirit of this team."
And despite dire predictions that Toronto wouldn't embrace the Games, fans are showing up, most venues are crowded, many are sold out.
Harnett is happy.
"It's like throwing a 50th birthday party, and sending out 85 invitations, and then waiting to see if anyone turns up," said Harnett, who turned 50 recently.
They showed up.
