In an extra-time thriller, Lakeshore SC of Quebec claimed the Sport Chek National Club Championship as they defeated Kitchener spirit of Ontario 3-1 under wet and soggy conditions at the South Surrey Athletic Park.
Two goals from Kyra D’Annessa and the game-winner from Alexia Remillard were enough the edge the
Quebec club past their provincial neighbours.
As is often the case with championship winning teams, Lakeshore SC was full of self-belief, which was echoed by head coach Luigi Tarricone.
“It was an unbelievable challenge that we set for ourselves this year. We wanted to come to the national tournament and prove that we could [win] and we prevailed”
In what was an extremely hard-fought Championship Final, regulation was simply not enough to separate the two sides as the game remained scoreless after 80 minutes.
Lakeshore would be first to strike in the opening frame of extra time through striker Kyra D’annessa, who has been central to much of Lakehores SC attack all tournament long.
The lead would not last long however, as Kitchener stormed back with an equalizer in the 93rd minute through Alexandra Bruder who hit a looping shot over the outstretched arms of a helpless Lakeshore SC keeper.
As is often the case, the best players deliver in key moments and this certainly rang true as star striker Alexia Remillard would find the championship winning goal in the 101st minute after she controlled a pass with her right foot before firing a left footed strike the bottom corner. Remillard’s goal was one of real quality, which was of little surprise as the striker has found the net consistently all week long with a total of five goals.
As the time-ticked down and with Kitchener desperately trying for an equalizer, Lakeshore SC found an insurance marker on the counter attack as D’Annessa added her second of the game. After receiving a pass from Remillard on a two on one break, D’Annessa did well to remain composed under pressure before sliding the ball past an onrushing keeper.
A humble Tarricone, who appeared emotionally drained after the match was clearly proud of the way his team performed, “It was a big game. With both teams running out of gas [in extra time], we needed to keep on working and push them to the limit and we did and we came out on top”
