GHONEIM NAMED CIS PLAYER OF THE YEAR, WONG AND WOOD ALSO HONOURED
York University Lions women's soccer player Nour Ghoneim was named the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) player of the year on Wednesday night (Nov. 11).
The fourth-year striker from Aurora, Ont., became the second York player to claim the Chantal Navert Memorial Award, joining 2008 recipient Stefania Morra. She was also named a CIS first-team all-Canadian for the second consecutive year.
Two other Lions were also honoured at the year-end awards banquet. Midfielder Sarah Wong and defender Shannon Wood were both named CIS all-Canadians. For Wong, it was her third straight honour on the first team, making her the first York women's soccer player in program history a three-time first-team all-Canadian.
Wood was honoured on the national level for the first time.
Ghoneim has been an offensive force since her Lions debut in 2012. The former CIS rookie of the year, and also a three-time OUA all-star, is one of the most dynamic scorers ever to suit up for York, with a career scoring average of more than one goal per game in conference play (56 in 53 contests).
This season, the fourth-year psychology student led the nation in scoring with 18 goals in 16 league games to be named the OUA West MVP for the second year in a row. She had multi-goal efforts on four occasions, led the OUA in shots (70) and game-winning goals (4), and was also a perfect 4-for-4 on penalty kicks. Her brilliant play was one of the key factors in the Lions going undefeated in the regular season with a CIS-best 15-0-1 record.
"Nour has been a difference-maker for our program since she first stepped on the pitch as a rookie in 2012," said Lions head coach Carmine Isacco. "She is a relentless competitor and has an uncanny ability to find goals from nothing, whether the ball is in the air or at her feet. She is a special player that does special things in big moments and I am so proud of everything she has accomplished at York."
Wong, from Toronto, is also no stranger to individual accolades as she earned OUA first-team recognition for the third time in as many seasons with the Lions. Her playmaking abilities in the middle of the field drive a Lions attack that averaged more than three goals per game this season, and she also accounted for three goals herself and another two in the team's quarter-final win over Guelph.
Wood, of Brampton, Ont., wrapped her fifth and final season with the Lions with her fourth OUA all-star selection. She was the best defender for the OUA's stingiest defence, a unit that allowed only seven goals in 16 games, and this season she also tallied the opening goal in a win over Guelph.
