This is a pretty amazing story from Cristiano Ronaldo’s childhood, as told by Luis Pereira and Juan Ignacio Gallardo in their new biography on the 2014 Ballon D’Or, ‘Secrets of the Machine’ (competition give-away shortly).

The pair have gone to great lengths to uncover Ronaldo’s path to greatness, tracing his tough childhood in Madeira all the way to Madrid, and indeed it’s the section on his adolescence that perhaps reveals the most about Cristiano’s formative years.
Pereira and Gallardo describe the problems he encountered during his Lisbon years, and one in particular reveals the bravery that lay within even then.
In January 2001, Ronaldo and three friends from the Sporting U18 team ventured out to Lisbon city centre (all aged 15), and were approached by a gang of muggers armed with knives on the Lisbon metro. 2 of the boys fled, so the tale goes, while Ronaldo and one other boy, Jose Semedo, stayed to stand their ground.
Pereira and Gallardo explain that no weapons were used, but the gang did fight with Ronaldo and his friend, and rough them up a bit, leaving them with bruisings and scrapes.
A pretty amazing story showing the bravery of the young Ronaldo, a trait he brought with him to Manchester, refusing to be cowed by rough-house tackling and tactics.
