Canada Men's U20 setting sights on 2015

They may still be in the early stages of their careers, but the Canadian Men’s U-20 that’s assembled for a week of training already has plenty of professional and international experience to their names.
New Head Coach Rob Gale has 23 players together in Sunrise, Florida, USA, for a week of training and intrasquad matches as they get preparations underway in earnest for next year’s CONCACAF Under-20 Championships which serve as qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015.
Included in the squad are Michael Petrasso and Fraser Aird—both players with professional experience in England and Scotland, respectively. But there are a number of players who have also featured in training camps at the senior level with Canada’s Men’s National Team and Head Coach Benito Floro.
“I am delighted that we were able to get the majority of the players we wanted into this camp and with qualifying a very short distance away it is important for the group to come together and start building the rapport and playing relationships that are going to be vital to us going forward,” said Gale. “It is great that these young lads are getting valuable first team experience and our overseas lads like Fraser , Michael and Dylan (Carreiro) are able to bring their experiences to the group.”
The team started training on Sunday 11 May and will be on the field every day until Sunday 18 May.
Gale says the focus of the camp is to work on the team’s attacking versatility and to work on the team’s system’s of play and being able to adapt to the sorts of competition they’ll be facing when they take on CONCACAF’s best.
“That will give us options depending on our opponents strengths and weaknesses come competition time,” said Gale. “It promises to be a great camp and there is a healthy competition for places across the board and a great energy amongst the boys.”

Canadian Soccer Association holds Annual General Meeting and Banquet

10 May 2014
In what is one of its biggest annual reoccurring event, the Canadian Soccer Association convened its membership for its Annual General Meeting weekend from 8-12 May 2014 in Vancouver, BC. In addition to the Board of Director elections and Annual Banquet, the weekend provides representatives from Provincial/Territorial Member Associations with a chance to participate in workshops on topics spanning from governance to strategic planning and technical programming to risk management.
As part of the Annual General Meeting on Saturday, the membership proceeded with the election of two directors and a Vice-President to its Board of Directors.
The Canadian Soccer Association Board of Directors is composed of eleven Directors and two Officers (Vice-President and President).
Steve Reed was re-elected for a four-year mandate as Vice-President. Don Story, Chair of the Governance Committee, has been re-elected for a Director position (Saskatchewan/Manitoba), while Nick Bontis, Chair of the Strategic Committee, has been re-elected for another Director mandate (Ontario).
The members of the Board of Directors, following these elections, are Victor Montagliani (President), Steve Reed (Vice-President), Wendy Bedingfield, Nick Bontis, Brian Burden, Charmaine Crooks, Charlie Cuzzetto, Ryan Fequet, Gerald MacDonald, Martial Prud’homme, Robert Richardson, Amélia Salehabadi-Fouques, and Don Story.
The Annual General Meeting concluded with the 2014 Annual Banquet of the Canadian Soccer Association, hosted by BC Soccer. The Annual Banquet marks the celebration of Canadian soccer and the achievements of its participants over the previous year. The 2014 edition honoured five recipients with Awards.
The Award of Merit was handed out to three individuals who have made a significant contribution to the sport of soccer in Canada in the areas of promotion, growth and development for no less than a period of ten years.
Respected for his wealth of knowledge and his dedication to the growth and development of the game, Don Dacey, recipient of a 2014 Award of Merit, has become a leader in the area of Provincial and National Club Championships.
An honoured member of the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame, the second recipient of a 2014 Award of Merit, Robert (Bob) Sawtell, is a member of the Canada Soccer Referees Committee and a National List Assessor.
The third recipient of a 2014 Award of Merit, Leeta Sokalski, is considered a soccer legend in British Columbia for the role she played as player, coach, referee, administrator and pioneer.
The 2014 Ray Morgan Award, presented to the referee whose performance at the national and international level is the most deserving of recognition for the year, was presented to Marie-Soleil Beaudoin. In her first assignment to a CONCACAF competition, she was appointed to the final at the 2013 CONCACAF Boys Under-15 Championship, inspiring a new generation of up and coming referees.
The last honour of the evening, the Aubrey Sanford Meritorious Service Award for outstanding overall contribution to soccer presented by President Victor Montagliani, was bestowed on a faithful servant of the game, Dr. Edward Johnson, who served as team physician for over 30 years.
The evening was also marked by the presence of special guest speaker Charmaine Crooks, five-time Olympian, Olympic silver medalist and Order of Canada recipient.
