A man has been shot dead trying to stop an attempted robbery at a Toronto flea market Saturday afternoon, witnesses say.

The shooting occurred at the intersection of Old Weston Rd. and St. Clair Ave. W.
The victim, a man in his 60s, was shot around 3:30 p.m. at the flea market, police said. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene minutes later.
Police detained a male suspect, who had fled the scene, just before 4 p.m.
Edgar Yanez, 22, who works in the Toronto Weston Flea Market with the victim, said he heard at least two gun shots.
“People just started running and screaming,” he said. “I think there could have been a third shot, but with all the screaming, it was hard to hear.”
Yanez said he hid behind a counter and when the shooting stopped, he walked over and saw a body lying in a pool of blood on the floor.
According to Yanez, the victim was trying to stop the suspect from robbing a jewelry store and died as a result.
A sergeant at the scene, who did not provide their name, said that the victim was born in 1952. Yanez said he was 65.
The sergeant also said that the suspect was a young offender—a minor—and had been caught quickly because a civilian chased after him following the shooting.
Police have not officially confirmed the victim’s age or the suspect’s. They are still looking into the circumstances of the shooting.
Homicide have taken over the investigation.
