Police are calling a mid-October home invasion spree in northwest Toronto an “act of terror in 24 hours.”
On Oct. 16 and 17 a group of at least three armed males and two females committed a series of armed home invasion burglaries in the Weston Rd. and Eglinton Ave. W. area.
“They went door-to-door, systematically, trying to terrorize members of the community,” said hold up squad Staff Insp. Mike Earl.
When a 48-year-old man refused to let the invaders into his apartment on Oct. 16, he was shot twice through his door. The man lost his left kidney and suffered a broken arm and lacerated liver, Earl said.
On Oct. 17, a 16-year-old victim was forced from his residence to the attackers’ vehicle at gunpoint.
Around 9:30 p.m., Oct. 17 police received a report of kidnapping. They identified the suspects’ vehicle and a chase ensued. A short time later, police found the suspects’ vehicle, where it had crashed through a fence and hit a house on Vicknell Rd.
A loaded handgun and property from robberies on Oct. 16 and 17 was found at the scene, police said. The kidnapping victim escaped his captors after the accident, police said.
“In a lot of home invasions the intruders know the victims. In this case it’s a random act of violence,” said Earl.
The suspects took jewelry, electronics, identification and other items, police said.
On Oct. 25, 28-year-old Wendel McLean was arrested and charged with multiple kidnapping, firearm and robbery offences.
A 15- and a 16-year-old female were charged on Oct. 25 with related offences.
Police are looking for public assistance identifying a black male in 20s believed to be an associate of McLean. He is about six-foot-two with a good build, wears glasses and may have tattoos on the back of both hands.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Hold Up Squad 416-808-7350 or Crime Stoppers.
