After providing the backbone of Cuba's top Latin dance bands and recording on more than 100 CDs, Cuban trumpet virtuoso Alexander Abreu is storming the salsa scene with his own band Havana D'Primera, comprised of 13 of the most accomplished and celebrated musicians currently working in Cuba.
Composer, arranger and lead vocalist for the group, Alexander Abreu has been called the greatest trumpet player of his generation and is widely renowned for his instrumental work with groups such as Irakere, Chucho Valdés, Juan Formell, Omara Portuondo, Paulo FG, Isaac Delgado and Manolín El Médico De La Salsa.
In the five years since the band was formed, Havana d'Primera has become the foremost purveyor of "timba," a high energy incarnation of Afro-Cuban folkloric dance rhythms that incorporates everything from Cuban pop to American bebop, funk and R&B. With their complex rhythms and horn lines, Havana d'Primera has revitalized timba for a new generation of fans. Their singles Cuando el Rio Suena, Confiésale and Historia Verdadera are packing dance floors in Toronto and across the world.
The group has two enthusiastically received CDs to its credit, Haciendo Historia in 2011 and Pasaporte in 2012. The latter won the Cubodisco Award this year for Best Popular Dance Music.
After extensive touring through the US, South America, Europe and Asia where they performed for huge crowds, Havana D'Primera is poised to become the most popular Cuban group of our time. Fans won't want to miss this chance to see these first-rate musicians at the top of their game in Lula's intimate setting.
