Dubois and Wozniak lose their singles matches on Day 2 in Brazil
Montreal, February 2, 2012 – The Miele Canadian Fed Cup team lost their second tie at the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group I event currently underway in Curitiba, Brazil, falling 3-0 to Argentina on the outdoor clay courts at the Graciosa Country Club on Thursday.
Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) opened the tie with a 7-5, 6-4 loss to 19-year-old Paula Ormaechea, ranked a career-best no. 139 on the WTA rankings after qualifying for the main draw at the Australian Open and reaching the second round. It was up to Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC) to keep Canada alive in the tie and she came up short, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Florencia Molinero, ranked no. 184 in the world. Mailen Auroux and Maria Irigoyen defeated Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON) and Marie-Ève Pelletier (Repentigny, QC) 6-0, 6-3 in the doubles match to complete the Argentine sweep.
Canada will face the Bahamas on Friday in their final round robin tie. In order for Canada to have a chance to finish first in their group and play for a spot in the World Group II playoffs in April, they must beat the Bahamas and have Peru defeat Argentina. If that were to happen, a tiebreaker method would be used by the ITF to determine which team would finish first in the group. Should that scenario not happen, Canada will remain in the Americas Zone Group I for 2013 and not play any additional Fed Cup ties during the 2012 season.

Dubois et Wozniak s’inclinent en simple au Brésil
Montréal, le 2 février 2012 – L’équipe canadienne Miele de la Fed Cup a subi la défaite lors de la deuxième journée de compétition du Groupe I de la zone des Amériques de la Fed Cup par BNP Paribas, s’inclinant 3-0 face à l’Argentine sur les terrains de terre battue du Graciosa Country Club, à Curitiba, au Brésil.
En levée de rideau, Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) a plié l’échine 7-5 et 6-4 face à la jeune Paula Ormaechea qui occupe actuellement le 139e rang mondial après s’est qualifiée pour le tableau principal des Internationaux d’Australie et y avoir atteint le deuxième tour. C’est donc à Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC) que revenait la tâche de conserver intacts les espoirs du Canada, mais elle s’est malheureusement inclinée 6-2 et 6-2 face à la 184e mondiale, Florencia Molinero. Par la suite, Mailen Auroux et Maria Irigoyen ont signé un gain de 6-0 et 6-3 face à Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON) et à Marie-Ève Pelletier (Repentigny, QC) pour compléter le balayage argentin.
Le Canada disputera le dernier tour du tournoi à la ronde vendredi contre les Bahamas. Pour que le Canada puisse terminer au premier rang de son groupe et puisse ainsi jouer pour une place aux qualifications pour le Groupe mondial II en avril, il doit battre les Bahamas et le Pérou doit vaincre l’Argentine. Selon ce scénario, l’ITF utiliserait le règlement de bris d’égalité pour déterminer quelle équipe finirait en tête. Par contre, si ce scénario ne se présente pas, le Canada resterait dans le Groupe I de la zone des Amériques pour 2013 et ne disputerait pas d’autres rencontres en 2012.

Wozniak wins in singles and doubles to lead Canada in Brazil
Montreal, February 1, 2012 – The Miele Canadian Fed Cup team opened the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group I matches currently underway in Curitiba, Brazil with a 2-1 victory over Peru on the outdoor clay courts at the Graciosa Country Club on Wednesday.
Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) opened the tie with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Patricia Ku, ranked no.572 on the WTA rankings, to give Canada the early lead. In the second match, Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC) erased a set and break deficit against Bianca Botto, ranked no. 297 in the world, to find herself one game away from victory at 5-3 in the third set. However, Botto fought back to win the final four games and post a 6-2, 6-7(1), 7-5 triumph to level the tie at 1-1. Wozniak and Marie-Ève Pelletier (Repentigny, QC) won the decisive doubles match 6-1, 6-0 over Ku and Katherine Miranda to give Canada the 2-1 win on the opening day of play.
Wozniak’s two wins bring her career Fed Cup victory total to 37, further adding to the Canadian Fed Cup record mark she established a few years ago. Pelletier posted her 23rd career Fed Cup win and 15th in doubles.
Canada will face Argentina on Thursday and the Bahamas on Friday in the final two ties of round robin play. Canada holds a record of three wins and three losses against Argentina in Fed Cup play. The last time the two countries played was in 2010 at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal with Canada posting a 5-0 sweep to earn a spot in World Group II.
The nine participating nations in this year’s Americas Zone Group I event are divided into two groups. The winners of each group will then face off for the chance to take part in a World Group II playoff tie in April 2012 while the two lowest ranking teams will be sent to Group II of the Americas Zone in 2013.

Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) a amorcé la rencontre avec un gain de 6-4 et 6-2 face à Patricia Ku, 572e au classement du WTA, pour ainsi donner l’avance au Canada. Dans le deuxième match, Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC) a réussi à effacer un déficit d’une manche et d’un bris contre Bianca Botto, 297e mondiale, pour prendre les devants 5-3 dans la troisième manche. Cependant, Botto s’est bien battue pour remporter les quatre jeux suivants et ainsi niveler la marque avec un gain de 6-2, 6-7(1) et 7-5. Par la suite, Wozniak et Marie-Ève Pelletier (Repentigny, QC) ont uni leurs efforts pour remporter le match décisif de double en deux manches de 6-1 et 6-0 face Ku et à Katherine Miranda, procurant ainsi au Canada une victoire de 2-1.
La fiche de Wozniak en Fed Cup comprend maintenant 37 victoires, améliorant par le fait même le record qu’elle avait établi il y a quelques années. Quant à Pelletier, elle a inscrit le 23e gain de sa carrière en Fed Cup et son 15e en double.
Jeudi, le Canada sera opposé à l’Argentine, puis terminera le tournoi à la ronde contre les Bahamas, vendredi. Le Canada possède une fiche de trois gains et trois revers face à l’Argentine. Lors du dernier affrontement entre les deux pays, le Canada avait balayé ses rivales 5-0 au Stade Uniprix, à Montréal, en 2010 pour ainsi accéder au Groupe mondial II.
Les neuf nations participantes sont divisées en deux groupes.
